GCOOS joins new $360 million national effort focused on water hazards and water resources
GCOOS will be contributing oceanographic and meteorological historical data to the University of Alabama’s recently-established Cooperative Institute. With transformative support of up to $360 million over the next five years from the federal government, the University is poised to become a standard bearer in translating water research into operations that improve the nation’s ability to predict water-related hazards and effectively manage water resources. GCOOS’ contribution will help to establish a better understanding of land-ocean interactions and develop products designed to support stakeholder communications.
Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (MASGC) announces funding
The Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (MASGC) has selected six research projects worth $1.3 million to receive funding. The university-based projects aim to help people, policy-makers and resource managers make decisions that lead to the responsible use of ocean and coastal resources in Alabama, Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico region.

NOAA releases new database on businesses that could be impacted by flooding
The database provides employment statistics in coastal inundation zones and is one of the newest products available from NOAA’s Digital Coast. Information about the number of businesses and employees impacted by flood events will help communities analyze risk and understand the potential economic impacts of flooding.
NASEM Gulf Research Program monitoring report now available
An Approach for Assessing U.S. Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration: A Gulf Research Program Environmental Monitoring Report, is now available for download here. The report assesses the cumulative effects of multiple restoration projects along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast; considers the effects of acute events and long-term physical changes on restoration projects; recommends adaptive management strategies; and assesses existing resources, including available data, for informing decision-making.
Open Ocean Trustees release restoration strategy for fish, water column invertebrates
The Open Ocean Trustees released their first strategic plan for restoring fish and water column invertebrates injured by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The plan is a result of the past collaborative work of subject matter experts with input from stakeholders provided during several public engagement opportunities.

"Tides of Change: Gulf Coast Communities Respond to Rising Seas,” will air April 24 at 5 p.m., April 27 at 9 p.m. and April 29 at 1:30 p.m. on Mississippi Public Broadcasting.
