NJ Parity Bill Scheduled for Senate
Hearing

The Parity Bill (S2919/A4498), having passed in the Assembly early this month, will be heard by the Senate Commerce Committee on June 19th. Although the bill passed largely unopposed in the Assembly, we may face heavier opposition from opponents as the bill progresses. Several of our rank will be testifying in the bill's defense on Monday. If you feel qualified and willing to provide testimony in support of the bill please let us know. This is your chance to help secure equal provision of services for mental health services in NJ!

Contact Anthony Gallo, our Advocacy Associate, if you'd like to testify: [email protected] or (732) 296-8070 ext.15

Gun Violence Reaches the US Government

As you have probably heard, a gunman opened fire at a GOP baseball practice in Alexandria, Va. yesterday morning. At least five people, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and two Capitol Police officers, were wounded. The suspect was shot by police and later died.

It is outrageous that in our nation, we must still live with the ongoing threat of such violent and deadly events. Attempts to limit the size, power and availability of weapons has repeatedly been thwarted in Congress, and attacks continue.

This time, members of Congress were the target. We don't have enough information to speculate on the reasons behind this shooting but we condemn the shooting regardless of the reasons. However, maybe this time ~ with the risk and impact so close to home ~ Congress will consider legislation that will reduce gun violence in our communities... for everyone's sake.

At the suggestion of our Advocacy Partner, NJ Citizen Action, we encourage you to contact your Member of Congress today.

All Members and their staffs must be incredibly upset by this event. Tell them that you are horrified by this act of violence and offer your support. You can find contact information for your Representative here.

NASW-NJ Parity Bill Passed in Assembly

Senate Hearing June 19th

NASW-NJ is fighting for equal
access to insurance benefits for mental health and addiction services. Through the combined efforts of NASW-NJ, the Parity Coalition, and NASW-NJ members who called legislators in support, bill A4498 was almost unanimously approved last Thursday. The bill now moves to the Senate and is scheduled to be heard on June 19th. Keep an eye on your inboxes for potential calls to action.
