Jan Palach Memorial: Closes July 23

Through an exhibition and an installation, The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture proudly celebrates the work of 1950 Cooper Union graduate, architect and Dean Emeritus, John Q. Hejduk.

The exhibition Hélène Binet - John Hejduk Works presented seven of Hejduk's built works as photographed by Hélène Binet, a renowned London-based photographer who was Hejduk's photographer of record. Binet's photographs of both permanent and temporary structures were presented, including the Berlin Tower, Wall House 2, The Collapse of Time, Security and Object/Subject. The exhibition also included a chronology of the numerous realizations of Hejduk's design for the Jan Palach Memorial, which was permanently installed in Prague in 2016. Comprised of two structures - House of the Suicide and House of the Mother of the Suicide - this work honors the Czech activist and dissident Jan Palach, whose self-immolation in protest of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 served as a galvanizing force against the communist government then in power.

As a companion to the interior installation, the School of Architecture installed the Jan Palach Memorial on the plaza outside The Cooper Union's Foundation Building. These structures, first constructed at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in 1990, represent an architectural manifestation of a powerful socio-political act, the ultimate personal sacrifice at a critical moment in the ongoing global struggle for individual freedom against autocracy and centralized control.

The Man Who Built the Brooklyn Bridge

Washington Roebling constructed one of America's most iconic structures, the Brooklyn Bridge, but his story spans much more than just the East River. It's a story of immigration, personal adversity, and pushing the boundaries of possibility. However, Roebling did not complete this feat alone. Emily Warren Roebling, his wife, played a crucial role in completing this incredible feat of 19th-century engineering. Join   Erica Wagner, author of the new biography Chief Engineer: Washington Roebling, The Man Who Built the Brooklyn Bridge  for an in-depth conversation with fellow writer   Kevin Baker about the Roeblings, the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, and the making of modern New York.

Reception and book signing to follow.

WAYS TO GIVE BACK
Gussow Scholarship Fund Achieves its Goal!

The School of Architecture thanks the many alumni, faculty, colleagues and friends who worked together with great generosity and enthusiasm to establish the Sue Ferguson Gussow Scholarship Fund. This endowment honors Professor Sue Gussow (A '56) and her service to The Cooper Union as well as her indomitable spirit, love of drawing, and commitment to teaching. We are especially grateful to Anik Pearson (AR '95), Elizabeth Graziolo (AR '95), and Michael Samuelian (AR '95) for their joyful and tireless leadership in this effort. Together they inspired their fellow alumni, hosted events, solicited artwork for auction, and made innumerable calls in honor of Sue, in support of the school and on behalf of our students, today and in the future. We hope that this is one of many such efforts on behalf of The Cooper Union.

This first phase $100,000 endowment will provide for a scholarship to be awarded in perpetuity to a first year architecture student. The scholarship will be in addition to the 50% scholarship that is awarded to all admitted students at The Cooper Union.
