Greetings!
Summer is here, and UGA Extension Gwinnett has a lot to offer this season.

Minimize Mosquito Contact
Mosquitoes are quite troublesome throughout the summer and interfere with outdoor activities. The most effective method to control mosquitoes is finding and removing their breeding sites: clogged gutters, old tires, buckets, unused plastic swimming pools or other containers that collect and hold water. Prevent water from accumulating in the saucers of flowerpots or pet dishes. Apply insect repellents containing the chemical DEET according to label directions when outside or in high-risk areas. Make sure doors and windows shut tightly, and repair any screens that are damaged to prevent mosquitoes from entering. By managing their breeding sites, and employing tactics to prevent them from biting, you can reduce their numbers around your home. Turf and Landscape Diagnostics
Weeds can be major pests of home lawns. In addition to detracting from the natural beauty of turfgrasses, weeds compete for sunlight, soil moisture, nutrients, and space. For assistance with your weed problems, email a picture of your weed to Tim Daly and he will identify the type and how best to treat it. Tim is an Agricultural and Natural Resource Agent with UGA Extension. He may be contacted at 678-377.4011 or

Great Georgia Pollinator Census
|
|
August 23–24 2019
The Great Georgia Pollinator Census
is a citizen science initiative and you can help! On August 23 and 24, Georgians across the state can count and record pollinators. Goals for this program include: creating pollinator habitat; learning how to identify pollinators; and helping researchers collect data on pollinator populations. Citizens will be asked to count pollinators on a favorite pollinator plant for 15 minutes, and then upload results to a website. We are looking for bumble bees, carpenter bees, small bees, honey bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, and other insects. This project is perfect for schools doing STEM work, Home Owner Associations, Community Gardens, and more! Register now at the event website:
