H-F's 3D Art students - under the direction of Mr. Petecki - unveiled their amazing, inspiring sculpture, The Obelisk, on Tuesday night in a small South Building courtyard near the gym
. An excerpt from the dedication reads:
"The Obelisk was chosen as a reminder of the power and stability that an education from Homewood-Flossmoor High School can provide. The fractured mirror mosaic represents the individuality and diversity of our student body. As individuals, we all have varying strengths and ideas, however when challenged to work together, we can achieve something magnificent, strong, and powerful ... like the Obelisk. It is our hope that as future generations gaze into the Obelisk's reflection, they will be reminded of the responsibility each of us possesses to make a positive difference in the world."
Congratulations to our student-artists for their months of planning and hard work on this project: Ashley Grace Dureke, Dyeisha Garrison, Paul Monteilh, Joshua Platz, Rachael Rusek, Olivia Ryan, Kathleen Schmidt & Iesha Thompson.

IB Econ students raised money for underprivileged entrepreneurs
This year
Mr. Anello's
IB Economics students learned about the role of aid and microfinance in improving economic development of Lesser Developed Countries. Students lent money through
Kiva.org that gives short-term loans to development projects around the world. The 4th and 7th period classes each gave to a worthy cause. After researching the available loan options/recipients, students made presentations pleading for their person's case. The classes ended up selecting and partially funding a recipient in El Salvador who used the funds to build an electricity-producing windmill that would bring electricity to his family and village. The other recipient was from the Philippines who was asking for funds to expand his water-refilling station in order to increase access to clean water for people in his village.
