May Board of Directors Meeting
At their May meeting, the H-GAC Board of Directors approved the acceptance of $200,000 from the Texas Workforce Commission to assist in developing two new registered apprenticeship programs and training for 140 new apprentices in registered programs.

In addition, the Board approved the acquisition of four heavy-duty diesel trucks to replace older technology with cleaner, lower maintenance vehicles.

The Board also approved the priority ranking for FY18 criminal justice funds and authorized submission of the priority lists to the Governor's Office, Criminal Justice Division.  Moreover, the Board approved $383,967 to fund the first year of an Elder and Vulnerable Adult Justice Project in the region to assist older and vulnerable adult crime victims with better access to criminal justice and community services.
Trash Bash Celebrates 24 Years by Cleaning Up 52 Tons of Trash from Area Waterways
picking up trash at Lake Houston The 2017 River, Lakes, Bays 'N Bayous Trash Bash was held March 25 at 14 sites across the Galveston Bay watershed.

3,242 volunteers collected 52 tons of trash, picked up 1.5 tons of recyclable materials, and gathered 574 illegally dumped tires. More than half the volunteers were under 18, and 843 were involved in scouting.

Since Trash Bash's inception, 105,800 volunteers have collected 2,189 tons of trash, 16 tons of recycling, and 10,709 tires.

The next Trash Bash is set for Saturday, March 24, 2018. Save the date to celebrate 25 years of great work. Learn more about volunteering or sponsorship opportunities.

Trash Bash is managed by the Texas Conservation Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization, with additional guidance and leadership by the Houston-Galveston Area Council and a 40-member coordination committee.
2017 Newly Elected Officials Workshop

T he Houston-Galveston Area Council invites all newly elected city, county and ISD officials to participate in its annual workshop on Wednesday , July 12, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 
 
An outstanding group of experts on municipal issues will be presenting information on:
  • Legal Issues - Texas Open Meeting Act
  • Financial Management and Budgeting
  • City Staff/City Council Teamwork
  • Effective City Communications - Media Relations
Please reserve your seat by July 5, 2017. The cost is $45.00 and includes breakfast, lunch, and workshop materials.

Livable Centers Call for Planning Study Partners
H-GAC has released a call for planning study partners for the Livable Centers Program.

Partners are local governments or other eligible project sponsors. This is not a request for proposals from consulting firms.

The objective of the Livable Centers planning studies is to:

* Help create quality, walkable, mixed-use places;
* Create multi-modal travel choices;
* Improve environmental quality; and
* Promote economic development and housing choice.

Study recommendations may lead to projects for possible inclusion in the Regional Transportation Plan and future Transportation Improvement Programs.

H-GAC anticipates identifying four to six Livable Centers studies to recommend for funding in 2018 and 2019.

The deadline to apply is Monday, August 28. The Notice of Intent to Apply must be received by Friday, June 30.
H-GAC will host a pre-submittal meeting for potential sponsors at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at H-GAC Conference Room B, Second Floor.

 Texas Municipal League - Region 14 Spring Meeting

The members of TML Region 14 met on Thursday, April 20 at Bob's Steak and Chop House in Shenandoah to discuss current legislative issues facing the region's municipalities and to receive insightful information regarding opportunities to increase community and economic development through financial investment presented by J. Shane Howard, Sr. Vice President with Burditt Consultants, LLC.  
TML Region 14 President, Tamara Young-Hector, Council Member from the City of Willis presided over the meeting and was joined by Mayor Ritch Wheeler of the City of Shenandoah who gave a warm welcome to all in attendance. State TML President Mary Dennis,
Mayor of Live Oak, presented the Legislative Update and encouraged members to continue their support of TML as they worked to address the concerns faced by Texas municipalities.  State TML President Elect Holly Gray-McPherson also welcomed Region 14 members and expressed her excitement in serving as the upcoming state TML President. The Fall Meeting is set for August 11-12 at Moody Gardens Resort in Galveston.
