HACC Statement on the Death of George Floyd
The Housing Authority of Champaign County joins our nation and our local community in mourning the murder of George Floyd at the hands of officers in the Minneapolis Police Department. Unfortunately, this horrific event was only a recent instance in a long history of acts of systemic violence and oppression faced by people of color in America, and which too often have been carried out with impunity. We share the grief, frustration, and anger that many are feeling right now. However, we find inspiration in the countless numbers in our community and elsewhere who in recent days have peacefully demonstrated to demand justice, and who have refused to accept these acts of violence as normal and dare to dream of a world in which they are not.
As an organization, we believe all members of our community should be able to access quality living environments and realize their full potential, regardless of skin color. The ongoing struggle against racism and oppression is an obstacle we must face in working towards these goals. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We stand with those around the country marching against injustice.
HACC will continue to pursue our organizational goals of building a better Champaign County, moving forward together, and creating quality living environments. We will do so with a steadfast commitment to responsiveness, accountability, and justice in government service provision. Though we will continue to grieve, we have faith that by listening and working together as a community, a better world can be made possible.
