Quieting of My Head


Los Gatos, California, USA. Rita Norton utilizes photomontage as her primary medium. She is influenced by early 20th-century political art and design containing messages, both subtle and direct. Norton is a collector of images, including the many photos taken by her father, who was creative in the visual arts, and scraps of paper she has collected for color, content, and design. She enjoys the materiality of working with scissors, paper, and glue, as well as the freedom of expression with Photoshop to lighten and enhance. As an advanced student of these techniques, editing and refining to engage the eye and mind are important stages in developing a collage. She is constantly learning and enjoys the quieting of her head as she works and plays with a piece. MORE

Our goal is to create an event that attracts a variety of people working in various capacities, such as art professionals at museums, galleries, and centers as well as academics, writers, and artists. Responding to the Call lets us know that you would like to be a presenter at Kolaj Fest New Orleans 2026. The program at Kolaj Fest New Orleans 2026 promises to be a unique experience. In building a program, our aim is to break down hierarchy and foster dialogue among art professionals working in a variety of capacities. Maria Filek at the Billy Wilder Culture & Film Centre in Sucha Beskidzka, Poland through 10 March 2026. This exhibition, curated by Magdalena Leśnikowska, Karolina Glanowska, and Krzysztof Kachel, presents over 40 collage works by the artist Maria Filek created over the years. Maria Filek is from Wadowice, Poland. She is a long-time art teacher and a graduate of the Institute of Art at the University of Silesia in Cieszyn. In her work, she uses graphic techniques, ceramics, and collage; she believes that her interests were influenced by Daniel Mróz’s drawings published in the weekly magazine Przekrój. MORE

KOLAJ INSTITUTE SOLO ARTIST IN RESIDENCE


Grace Howarth


through 8 March 2026. During her Solo Residency, United Kingdom-based artist Grace Howarth will undertake a research-led collage project examining the visual logic of charms, talismans, and devotional objects within the city’s layered spiritual and cultural histories. The project takes the gris-gris as a conceptual framework rather than a literal object, using it to think through how images are assembled, activated, and circulated within systems of belief. Collage functions here both as method and metaphor: a practice of assemblage, correspondence, and transformation.

HAIRitage as a Cultural Journey


Fairborn, Ohio, USA. Erin Smith Glenn, MFA's most dynamic body of work connects a history of Black cultural hairstyles and adornment with contemporary times, as they are often presented and well-complemented together. This in itself is more than just an exhibit, but also as a kind of reckoning; a way of celebrating the innovations and successes of our ancestors using the creative resources and intellect of our generation. Throughout her own life, Smith Glenn has diligently observed and researched the great innovations in Black Hair Culture. Since 2008, her personal exploration of HAIRitage as a Cultural Journey has brought about new experiences, growth and development, with a focus now on a broadened vision. MORE

On Paper


at Yester House, Southern Vermont Arts Center, Manchester, Vermont, USA through 8 March 2026. “On Paper” features works by Elfriede Abbe, Barbara Ackerman, Tom Fels, Annie Ireland, Crystalle Lacouture, and Carolyn Shattuck—artists connected to Southern Vermont Arts Center through its Artist Member community. Together, they explore paper as a substrate through printmaking, drawing, cyanotype, collage, and mixed media. Interactive stations throughout Yester House invite visitors to engage directly with process, materials, and community responses. MORE

Mark Murphy: Terminal


In Kolaj #42, Mark Murphy takes collage to Glastonbury Festival. This year, the site commissioned Murphy to create “six animated collage sequences that featured on Terminal 1’s three departures board screens.” Looping throughout the weekend, the pieces sat alongside programming information, archive clips, subverted adverts, and other artists’ films. Combining dancing figures and figures in motion with moments of contemporary resistance and rebellion, Murphy sought to create a rhythmic and celebratory sense of bold defiance. These animations, created in After Effects, are part of an ongoing exploration by the artist into how collages move. Murphy’s work is a reminder that collage can go anywhere, and when it does, it can make visible complex and urgent contemporary issues. LEARN MORE AND GET YOUR COPY

Deadline: Sunday, 8 March 2026. Kolaj Magazine seeks artist-designed Cut-Out Pages from current members of the Kolaj Magazine Artist Directory for the 2026 World Collage Day Special Edition. A Cut-Out Page is a selection of fragments that one can use to make a collage. The feature reflects artists’ styles and approaches to collage making and shows how artists select and organize fragments. Cut-Out Pages are an expression of one's art practice, aesthetics, and approach to fragments. People use the Cut-Out Pages to make collage. DETAILS

Fragment as Verse on the Wall: PoetryXCollage


Early Deadline to Apply: 28 February 2026. A week-long in-person PoetryXCollage residency in New Orleans, Sunday, 12 April to Thursday, 16 April 2026. The focus of the residency will be about making artwork at the intersection of poetry and collage for the exhibition, "The Fragment as Verse." Artists will have 24-hour access to the gallery, studio, and material library where they can work in community to make collage poetry. In daily meetings, artists will share work and get feedback from one another. Prior to the residency, artists will meet virtually where Ric Kasini Kadour will make presentations on the history of the project, artist practice, and the ecosystem of Poetry & Collage and Jennifer Roche will present on her observations of the intersection. Through in person discussions, artists will explore how the art they make at the intersection of poetry and collage exists on the printed page and on the wall of a gallery. Artists will be invited to present their work at the opening of the exhibition, "The Fragment as Verse," on Saturday, 18 April 2026, 2-4PM. The in-person artist residency at Kolaj Institute Gallery will coincide with the New Orleans Poetry Festival (16-19 April 2026) where we hope artists will connect with poets, editors, and publishers. At Kolaj Institute, our philosophy is that if we bring artists together, explore ideas and concepts, share knowledge, we can stretch and develop as artists. When we bring that knowledge and skill into our communities, we raise the standing of collage and contribute to the civic discourse. Kolaj Institute's Artist Development Program is a collection of three core workshops for self-motivated artists, at any stage in their career, who want to develop and expand their collage-based artist practice and work towards professional goals, particularly in the areas of exhibitions and publishing. Kolaj Institute’s solo residencies in New Orleans are designed to provide artists, curators, and writers with dedicated time and space to work on a project. We are open to your ideas. We are looking for artists with an articulated goal for their time in New Orleans. That goal need not to be explicitly related to New Orleans, though priority will be given to those artists whose projects need time in New Orleans. These Solo Residencies are taking place at Kolaj Institute’s home in the New Orleans Healing Center and help further Kolaj Institute's mission to support artists, curators, and writers who seek to study, document, and disseminate ideas that deepen our understanding of collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a 21st century movement. Folklore Collage Society, Volume 1


Folklore Collage Society is a printed journal dedicated to artwork and artists who activate, transmit, and celebrate folklore as a form of cultural expression and a strategy for community resilience. In its pages, stories, statements, essays, field notes, poetry, and song lyrics mingle with collage art that shows how collage artists are thinking about the folklore. Authoritarian Regime Survival Guide


Authoritarian Regime Survival Guide is a collage. The book combines the text of a Polish human rights activist Martin Mycielski with the artwork of seven collage artists to create a space in which we can think about the rise of authoritarianism and how to navigate the troubling, difficult times in which we find ourselves. Organized as a series of lists, the book illustrates what to expect under authoritarianism and offers rules for surviving authoritarian regimes and engaging their supporters. The introduction traces how the text came into existence and how the artists came together to make collage about it. Ric Kasini Kadour shares historical examples of artists responding to authoritarianism; John Heartfield’s anti-fascist collage and a 1979 exhibition in East Germany that was described as a “victory over false consciousness.” Authoritarian Regime Survival Guide is a testament to the role art can play in our communities.

Gain of Function: New Mutations/Old Traditions/ Collective Effervescence


This project led by Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA-based artist Emily Denlinger speaks to the role of art, ritual, and resilience. Building on her own work, Denlinger engaged with thirty-nine artists at the 2025 edition of Kolaj Fest New Orleans to make locative collage photographs in an artist-created landscape inspired by global masking traditions. The resulting artworks are presented in this zine published by Kolaj Institute. "The project functions as 21st century folklore with each character potentially representing a magical creature or masked performer in some yet-to-be-imagined ritual," wrote Kolaj Institute Director Ric Kasini Kadour. "Like the odd, creature-like figures of early 20th century Surrealists, they, too, are a response to deeply troubled times and offer us the opportunity to find a collective effervescence to see us through them."
