Student Participation in the SOTF Conference

Call for Student Proposals

The SOTF Conference will once again include student presentations as part of the Conference offerings. Proposals will be accepted for both in-person and pre-recorded presentations, which will be made available as part of a digital program accessible only to registered SOTF attendees.

The purpose of student presentations is to give students the opportunity to "teach the teachers." Student proposals should address best teaching practices and should inspire thinking about learning from the student's perspective. All proposals can include up to 4 students and must include 1 teacher who will serve as an advisor and point person.

Presentation Formats:

  • In-Person Presentations (45 Minutes). These can be a more traditional presentation, or an interactive lecture involving participant-engaged learning experiences.
  • In-Person Workshops (1 Hour and 50 Minutes). Workshop sessions provide for a deeper dive exploration of a particular topic, resource, or tool. They should be dynamic and engaging, where attendees are actively participating in activities and/or discussion.
  • Pre-Recorded Presentations (up to 1-hour long). These will be recorded and submitted ahead of the Conference; a TedTalk format is ideal.

All accepted student presentation groups will receive complimentary registration for the day on which their presentation will occur.

The teacher that is the primary contact for the student group is responsible for securing all necessary permissions, and adhering to their school or organization's policies and procedures for student participation in this event.

The deadline to submit proposals is September 14, and notifications of acceptance will be sent the week of September 19.

We have prepared a Proposal Planning Template to help with the submission process. Please make a copy or download this document before making any changes to it.

The Healer Stones of Kapaemahu Bishop Museum Exhibition: thru Oct. 16

The Bishop Museum has a new immersive exhibition, The Healer Stones of Kapaemahu, that explores the history and contemporary meaning of 4 monumental boulders on Waikiki Beach that honor the legendary mahu - people of dual male and female spirit - who brought the healing arts from Tahiti to Hawai’i long ago. Although the stones have survived for centuries, their story has been suppressed and the respected role of mahu erased from the public record.

The exhibition is part of a multifaceted educational project that also includes an historical documentary, animated short film, and children's picture book with educational guide, that aim to help restore the stones, now a City and County of Honolulu public monument, as a reminder of Hawai’i’s long history of gender diversity and inclusion.
