Punahou Student Receives Language Scholarship
A Hawai'i
student
was selected by the U.S State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for a National Security Language Initiative for Youth Scholarship. Alexandra Jackson, a sophomore at Punahou and previously a Montessori Community School grad, was selected out of 3,300 applicants from across the U.S. Alexandra will study Chinese in Taiwan for the summer, where she will receive formal language instruction, live with a host family, and experience the local culture as part of an immersion environment.

Punahou Senior Sara Kay Awarded for Work in Tobacco Free Hawai'i Youth Council
This year's Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK) Youth Advocates of the Year Awards honored a Hawai'i student and member of the Youth Council with their top award. The Award Gala, held on May 24 in Washington, D.C., recognized visionary leaders and advocates that work to make the next generation tobacco-free. Sara Kay, a Punahou senior, was among six individuals and groups honored at the red carpet event. Sara was named the national Youth Champion of the Year, the top award presented by CTFK, in recognition for her advocacy work with the
Hawai'i Coalition for a Tobacco Free Hawaii's Tobacco Youth Council.

Nonprofit Organizations One-Day Seminar: Aug. 10
Chaminade University is hosting its
15th Annual Nonprofit Organizations One-Day Seminar
.
The seminar will provide information on current issues and changing requirements that affect nonprofits, and recent legislative and regulatory changes make this year's seminar especially relevant. This seminar is an opportunity for nonprofits to get caught up on new rules and laws; experts will guide attendees through tax-exempt compliance, the audit accounting standard, use of tax-exempt entities, and maintaining a tax-exempt status.

HSDM Grants Available: Aug. 31
The Hawai'i Educational Networking Consortium (HENC) has announced that Hawai'i Schools Digital Media (HSDM) Grants are now available for the 2018/19 school year. $1,000 to $3,000 per school each year in support of curricular or extracurricular programs, student-produced digital media and video. 8th Annual EMA Meeting: Sept. 25
Save the Date for the 8th Annual Enrollment Management Association (EMA) Meeting that will take place on September 25 at St. Louis School. This year's fall meeting will feature guest speaker Alexandra Scott. She will be speaking about "The Intersection of Gender Identity, Social Justice, and Mindfulness: How the Emergence of Transgender and Gender Non-Binary Children and Adults Creates a New Paradigm in Schools."

Yoga Ed Tools for Teachers Workshop: Sept. 27
This Yoga Ed. workshop will equip teachers with a broad variety of basic principles and tools to implement short yoga breaks with
children or teens. Participants will learn and practice yoga tools to effectively promote health, learning, and achievement.
This workshop can provide a deeper understanding of how to identify challenging times during a child

LSOTF Track @ SOTF X November 8 & 9
The LSOTF track will include specific featured speakers and workshop sessions during the Schools of the Future Conference that will allow pre-conference attendees to further build upon ideas/plans developed during the pre-conference. The sessions in the track will be open to pre-conference attendees, school leaders and aspiring education leaders. The track will culminate with a reflection session at the end of Day 2 for those who participated in the pre-conference. This will both provide an opportunity to debrief the experience, and to plan for next steps to keep our community connected.

Registration is now open for the first annual Edcamp West Oahu happening this summer. Registration is free and includes coffee, lunch, lots of learning, and prizes to give away. EdCamps are "UNconferences" that are free, vendor-free, and participant-driven PD events where the attendees determine the topics and facilitate the sessions, which are conversations - not presentations. This 3-day session focuses on the sharing of school curriculum, vision and pedagogical alignments around personalized, product-oriented global learning. Through a facilitated design process, participants collaborate on projects with educators from more than 25 schools in 10 countries. Attendees also connect with students participating in the
Student Global Leadership Institute
to observe and interact with their experiences with global change making. The goal of this design is to create opportunities for conversations and collaborations to take place, so that educators can return to their schools with new programming ideas. Coming up is a one-day workshop on "Engaging Students in Citizen Science Through the Prevention of Rat Lungworm Disease."
Workshop participants will engage in hands-on STEM activities designed to involve students of all ages in the prevention of rat lungworm disease through project-based learning. Workshop content is based on the new
Rat Lungworm Disease Curriculum Manual
developed by UH at Hilo College of Pharmacy.

Multisensory Writing: July 24 - 25
Multisensory Writing: Framing Your Thoughts/Project Read module - The first part of this workshop uses a systematic multisensory approach to teach the role of words in composing a sentence and to recognize patterns such as bare bone sentences, subject describers, and predicate expanders. The Cat in the Hat creates a day full of wacky adventure, wondrous balancing feats, and zany rhymes. It all seems under control until the Cat unleashes Thing 1 and Thing 2, wreaking havoc on the house and leaving the children to wonder what mother will say when she returns home. Doctor Seuss's classic comes to life on stage in an action-packed romp. Directed by UHM Theatre MFA recipient and Honolulu Theatre for Youth company member, Nathaniel Niemi.

CTL EMERGE Conference: Nov. 6
The Center for Tomorrows Leaders (CTL), a Hawai'i non-profit, is focused on Student Leadership. In
November
they will be holding their biannual conference, "EMERGE: Taking on Tomorrow," open to all Hawai'i students, grades 9-12, from all public, private, and charter schools.
This year's theme unites 1,000 students from across the state with the purpose of building their leadership skills and confidence in the hopes of creating a vision for the future of Hawai'i. Local leaders from various industries will speak to students to share their stories, as well as to help inspire Hawai'i's young potential leaders.
