2016-17 Global Issues Network Kick-Off Event: September 27 
We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2016-17 Global Issues Network (GIN) Kick-off Event! This event will serve as an opportunity for students to connect and engage with community partners and organizations, as well as network with other GIN students. Students will have the opportunity to continue working on their issues, while preparing for the first ever Hawai'i GIN Conference, to be held in the spring of 2017.  This event is intended for educators and students who are currently involved with GIN and for those who are interested in learning about GIN and how to engage with GIN in their school. 

Date: September 27, 2016

Hawai'i Schools Digital Media Grant: Deadline is August 31
The Hawai'i Education Networking Consortium (HENC) annually awards grants ranging from $1,000 - $3,000 to Hawai'i's emerging K-12 video producers. These grants allow any accredited public, charter, private, or parochial school in the state of Hawai'i to develop or expand media video programs and create original school-based videos, which are aired on TEACH channel 356, at 'Olelo Community Media. The application deadline is  August 31, 2016 and award notifications will be sent on September 30, 2016. HAIS Chaplains & Spiritual Leaders' Gathering: September 2

Honolulu Magazine Private School Guide Released 
The 2017 edition of the Private School Guide has just been released by Honolulu Magazine. The Private School Guide is a collaborative endeavor between HAIS and Honolulu Magazine, made possible because of the generosity of First Hawaiian Bank. The Guide serves as a wonderful resource for families considering Independent Education in Hawai'i. Additionally, the feature article " Re-Imagining Schools" highlights how schools are transitioning away from traditional teaching environments and embracing 21st century learning.  Click here  to view the virtual copy of the private school guide.

"HAIS On The Move" Webpage
The Hawai'i Association of Independent Schools is excited to announce a new webpage - HAIS On The Move. This new page will list all the conferences, events and programs, locally and across the globe, that the association is either participating in or involved with. 

HAIS Schools Re-Use Program 
The Hawai'i Association of Independent Schools continues to offer the HAIS Schools Re-Use Program. This program will allow HAIS Full Member schools to post items that they would like to donate to other schools (ex: ipads, computers, office furniture etc). Any HAIS Member school can complete an inquiry form, which will go directly to the listing school. Conference Updates 
2016 Schools of the Future: October 20 & 21

The Eighth Annual Schools of the Future Conference will convene on October 20 & 21, at the Hawaii Convention Center. Join teachers and administrators from Hawai'i's public, private, charter and parochial schools as they focus on how to best transform our existing schools and create new learning environments for the 21st Century. 

SOTF Registration 
There is still plenty of time remaining to register for this year's conference! In fact, online registration will remain open until October 14. Peace with the Heart of Aloha Conference - October 19
The Asia Pacific Children's Museum Conference - Peace with the Heart of Aloha - will take place on October 19, 20 and 21, and will be held alongside the Schools of the Future Conference. While Schools of the Future attendees are able to attend Peace with the Heart of Aloha sessions, on October 20 and 21, a separate ticket is needed to attend the Peace with the Heart of Aloha Conference, on October 19.
As a result of this collaboration, we are very pleased to offer registered SOTF attendees a deeply discounted ticket - $50, instead of $150 - to attend the Peace with the Heart of Aloha Conference, on October 19, at the Hawai'i Convention Center. For more information please click here

Feature Speaker Announcement: Pam Witmer 
Pam Witmer is the Senior Policy Manager at the Illinois Network of Charter Schools, where she advocates for policies on behalf of the Illinois' charter public school sector, provides support to strengthen charter schools, and influences education policy for the benefit of all public school students. The title of her presentation is "Under the Hood of Charter School Collective Bargaining Agreements."

The Identity & Diversity Pre-Conference will take place on Tuesday, October 18, from 12 noon to 5:00 pm and is open to K-12 educators and students in grades 9-12, in public, charter, and independent schools. More information to soon.

The 4th Annual Hawaii Education Leadership Summit (HELS) will take place on Wednesday, October 19 (the day before the Schools of the Future Conference), providing an opportunity for school leaders to talk about the future. SAVE THE DATE: 4th Annual EdCamp Honolulu 
On Saturday, October 22 (the day after the Schools of the Future Conference), Kamehameha Schools will host the 4th Annual EdCamp Honolulu. EdCamps are "UNconferences," that are free, partcipant-driven professional development events where the attendees set the schedule and lead the sessions, which are conversations, not presentations. EdCamp Honolulu will be an event full of rich discussions, cool demonstrations and plenty of hands-on learning. Registration will open on September 2, at 8am and is available by clicking here

IUCN World Conservation Congress Hawai'i Youth Challenge: Deadline August 19
The IUCN Congress Students' Day Hawaiʻi Youth Challenge 2020 will offer a dynamic opportunity for Hawaiʻi Middle and High Schools Statewide to participate in the IUCN Congress and influence the future of our islands. This event will  take place on September 6, from 8:00am - 2:00pm, at the Convention Center.  Hawai'i middle and high schools are encouraged to bring at least 1 team, consisting of 3 students and 1 teacher.
Students and teachers will:
- Learn from international professionals about real conservation challenges facing the Hawaiian Islands and the world.
- Apply scientific principles to design, evaluate, and refine frameworks to develop environmentally-conscious decisions for Hawaiʻi schools and communities.
- Brainstorm and collaborate with peers from around the state to develop long-term conservation projects for schools.   Click here  to sign up and to receive more information. 

Kokua Bikes at Honolulu Museum of Art: August 21 
Kokua Bikes will be at the Honolulu Museum of Art: Bank of Hawai'i Family Sunday Event, on August 21, from 11:00am to 5:00pm. During the event, kids will be able to try out Kokua Bikes' balance bikes and race around the central courtyard. 
Kokua Bikes will also have push-trikes reserved for special needs  children, who are unable to operate the balance bikes. 

Japan - U.S. Ocean Conservation Symposium: August 22 
The ocean's resources, as well as its possibilities, were long considered to be infinite. But now, faced with various problems such as global warming, pollution, overfishing and inappropriate development, the marine environment is in an unprecedented crisis. In order to keep the ocean beautiful for generations to come, women from the United States and Japan will discuss possible solutions at this symposium. Akie Abe, the First Lady of Japan and wife of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and Irene Hirano Inouye, President of the U.S.-Japan Council and wife of the late Senator Daniel K. Inouye, will be representing the two countries across the Pacific. This event will take place on Monday, August 22 from 10:00am- 4:00pm, at the Hawai'i Convention Center. JABSOM Big Island Teen Health Camp: August 27 
Medical Students from the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM ), along with other health professions students, and community health partners will be hosting a free healthcare activities camp. The event is open to m iddle and high school students and lunch will be provided. The camp will take place on August 27 from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm at Kamehameha Schools in Keaau, Hawai'i. World Conservation Congress Youth Symposium: September 10
The World Conservation Congress Youth Symposium will be held on September 10, at Le Jardin Academy, in Kailua, from 8:30 am-12:30 pm. This event is free and open to anyone between the ages of 14-29 years old. The mission of the Youth Symposium is to ensure that youth activists leave the World Conservation Congress with tangible steps of action to use in their local communities. 2016 Eddie Aikau Essay Contest: October 1 
All 7th through 10th graders, in the state of Hawai'i, are invited to enter the 2016 Eddie Aikau Essay Contest. Below is a list of all information necessary to complete a successful application. The postmark deadline to submit a signed application and essay is October 1. 

23rd Annual Hawai'i Children & Youth Day: October 2 
Hawai'i's 23rd Annual Children and Youth Month will kick-off with Children and Youth Day on Sunday, October 2, from 10:00am - 3:00pm, at the State Capitol and Surrounding Capital District. This event is free and will host over 300 interactive, educational, fun activities for infants, toddlers, children, youth and the entire family. There will also be free parking at several locations. LifeSmarts Hawai'i - Registration Open
Learn it! Live it!  LifeSmarts is a free, national educational program that teaches students critical life skills in five key areas: Personal Finance, Consumer Rights & Responsibilities, Health & Safety, the Environment, and Technology through online quizzes and in-person competitions. 
  • Teams must consist of 1 adult coach/teacher and at least 4 students
  • The online portion of the competition is open from October 24 - December 2, 2016.

Echos and Reflection: August 27 
The Hawai'i Council for the Humanities (HCH) is partnering with local and national organizations to sponsor a one-day workshop for intermediate and high school teachers called "Echoes and Reflections: Leaders in Holocaust Education." This workshop is free and open to teachers from public, private and charter schools throughout the state. HCH is contributing inter-island travel stipends for Neighbor Island teachers. Contact HCH history day coordinator Lisa Yamaki to register, arrange inter-island travel, or with any questions. 2016 Creative Challenge Art Contest: August 31
Legacy of Life Hawai'i is inviting middle school students to participate in their annual Creative Challenge Art contest. Honolulu Theatre Education Presents - MatheMagic: September 
Honolulu Theatre Education Presents Bradley Fields, in this September's performance of MatheMagic. Bradley Fields is an internationally acclaimed magician and educator who captivates students with his famous magic illusions, and turns them on to the history, the power and the beauty of the language of Math.  MatheMagic is a  performance  that uses math and problem-solving skills through visuals, history, language and world-class entertainment.

2017 Teacher Fellowships: September 1
Ecology Project International (EPI), an international education & conservation nonprofit, has just opened the application period for their 2017 Teacher Fellowships, which will take place in Costa Rica, Baja California Sur, and (for the first time) Yellowstone National Park. These are 8-day professional development opportunities geared toward high school and college-level educators interested in experiential education and conservation. All costs are covered by EPI, save a $250 program fee and the participant's airfare to the program site.  Educators can review the programs' focus areas, watch a promo video, and submit an application by clicking here.  The application period will close on September 1.

3-D LEARNING: NGSS in Our Classrooms
The NGSS Learning Seminars are open to public, charter, and independent school teachers interested in creating a community of educators to explore Next Generation Science Standards. Focus will be on grades K-5, but all are welcome. Attendance to all three sessions is highly encouraged and are free with dinner provided. All of these events will take place from 4:30 - 7:00pm at The Sullivan Center for Innovation and Leadership, at 'Iolani School.

UH Manoa Hawai'i High School Counselors Workshop: Sept 9
The UH Manoa Office of Admissions is hosting their annual High School Counselors Workshop for Hawai'i high school counselors who work with Juniors and Seniors. This is a free event intended to inform local counselors about the latest at UH Manoa.  Complimentary airfare is available to 1 neighbor island counselor per school. STEMplus Workshop: September 17
   
Learn how to help biologists monitor Aedes albopictus , the Dengue vector mosquito present on O'ahu, and discover from bird expert, Dr. Eric Vanderwerf, how to contribute to an island-wide citizen science  monitoring program for our Manu-o-Kū, the official bird of Honolulu and a threatened species in Hawai'i Biodiversity: Monitoring Mosquitos and Manu-o-Ku will be held at 'Iolani School on September 13 from 4:30 - 7:30pm.

STEMplus Workshops are open to public, charter, and independent school teachers of all grade levels interested in connecting classroom to community through Citizen Science. The purpose of these opportunities is to build a network of like-minded teachers, learn from experts, and engage in a data-collecting community of schools. Code.org Computer Science Workshop: Sept 17
Code.org workshops are free and open to K-5 educators interested in teaching computer science. Participants receive instruction from an experienced computer science facilitator, including an intro to computer science, pedagogy, overview of the online curriculum, teacher dashboard, and strategies for teaching "unplugged" classroom activities. The lessons align to CSTA Computer Science and ISTE standards, and reinforce concepts and skills taught in other subject areas by integrating national Math, English Language Arts, and Science standards. 13th Annual Nonprofit Organizations Seminar: September 30
Chaminade University is hosting this year's 13th Nonprofit Organizations One Day Seminar, on September 30, at the Pagoda Hotel. At this seminar, speakers will offer guidance on tax-exempt compliance and will review the categories and governing instruments for tax-exempt organizations. Teaching About Warfare & World War II Workshop: October 22 
The USS Missouri Memorial Association and its Education Department is offering a teacher workshop to HAIS and DOE schools. This workshop is free and limited to the first 30 registrations and  will feature Mr. Daniel Martinez, Chief Historian, National Park Service, World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, Dr. Mitch Yamasaki, Professor, and Dr. Frank Bailey, Assistant Professor, Chaminade University. They will speak and share teaching strategies on the topics of warfare and World War II. Teaching resources will be distributed free of charge. Teachers and interested parties may register by contacting David Suhs, Battleship Missouri Education Department, or by calling 808-455-1600 ext. 250. The deadline for registering is September 30. EdTechTeam Boot Camp and Google Apps Certification 
  EdTechTeam's Certification Bootcamps help educators gain the knowledge and understanding of how to use Google tools in the classroom, while preparing them to successfully gain Google Apps certification. EdTechTeam sends the best trainers in the world to help teachers not just learn about the tools, but discover new educational possibilities for their students and for themselves.

2017 Aloha Bowl: February 18 
On Saturday, February 18, 2017 the Hawaii regional competition for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB), known as the "Aloha Bowl," will be held at the University of Hawaii - Manoa campus. NOSB is a nationally recognized high school academic competition that provides a forum for students to test their knowledge of the marine sciences including biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, as well as marine policy. 

During the competition, high school students from around the state will test their knowledge of scientific and technical disciplines through quick answer buzzer questions and more complex team challenge questions. The winning team from each of the regional competitions will be awarded transportation and room and board to  participate  in the NOSB Finals competition, which will be held in April of 2017.
