HAMPTON ROADS CLOSURES ON WATER CROSSINGS, INTERSTATES AND OTHER NOTABLE DETOURS

For the week of May 15-21

 NOTE: This list covers full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges and primary roads, and lane closures at the bridge-tunnels and the Berkley, Coleman, High Rise and James River bridges.


*Scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors.*

Bridges & Tunnels:


Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, I-64:

  • Full directional closure eastbound May 15 from 2-3 a.m. and westbound from 3-4 a.m. for tide gate testing. Click here for the full traffic alert: https://conta.cc/3l1j7tG


Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, I-664:

  • Single-lane closures northbound with brief, intermittent stoppages up to 20 minutes May 16-18 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.


James River Bridge, Route 17:

  • Single-lane closures southbound May 16-19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
  • Single-lane closure northbound May 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

George P. Coleman Bridge, Route 17:

  • Alternating, mobile single-lane closures in both directions May 18 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • A series of bridge test openings in both directions May 19 from 7 p.m. to midnight.

Elizabeth River Tunnels (Downtown/Midtown Tunnels):

I-64, Southside Widening, High Rise Bridge Expansion:

  • Single-lane closures on I-64 east between the High Rise Bridge and George Washington Highway (exit 296) May 16 and 19 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-64 / I-264 Interchange Improvements Project, Norfolk/Virginia Beach:

  • Alternating, single-lane closures on the I-264 east collector-distributor lanes (outside set) at Newtown Road (exit 15A) May 15-21 from as early as 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Alternating, multi-lane closures on I-264 in both directions from Newtown Road (exit 15) to Witchduck Road (exit 16) May 15-21 from 7 p.m. until as late as noon.
  • Alternating, single-lane closures on the ramp from I-64 west to I-264 east (exit 284B) May 15-21 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Alternating, multi-lane closures on I-264 west from Witchduck Road (exit 16) to Newtown Road (exit 15) on May 13 at 7 p.m. to May 16 at 5 a.m. and on May 20 at 7 p.m. to May 22 at 5 a.m.

  • Alternating, full closure of off-ramps from I-664 south May 15-19 starting as early as 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.:
  • I-664 south to Power Plant Parkway / Powhatan Parkway (exit 2)
  • I-664 south to Aberdeen Road (exit 3)
  • I-664 south to Chestnut Avenue (exit 4)
  • Alternating, full closure of on-ramps to I-664 south May 15-19 starting as early as 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.:
  • On-ramp from Powhatan Parkway to I-664 south
  • On-ramp from Aberdeen Road to I-664 south
  • On-ramp from Roanoke Ave to I-664 south

Other Notable Closures


Route 164, Portsmouth:

  • Full closure of Route 164 (Western Freeway) west between Cedar Lane and Towne Point Road May 16-19 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
