This month we are shining a spotlight on the incredible individuals who make up the heart of HANWASH!

Operating under a "Champion partnership" model, Rotary Clubs in Haiti are joining forces with Rotarians in the US and Canada to create lasting change in communities across the country. This month we are thrilled to introduce five of the remarkable leaders who are spearheading projects that are transforming lives in the communes of Léogâne, Ferrier, Pignon, Terre-Neuve, and Cavaillon.

Friscat Gilles - President 2023-24 Rotary Club of Memorial des Gonaïves

I discovered Rotary because of their commitment to eradicating Polio and their dedication to providing water services. Water is an absolute necessity for life, so I became instantly interested and eager to get involved. When an opportunity arose in Terre-Neuve for a club focused on these issues, I knew I wanted to collaborate with other clubs and members to address them.

As President, education stands as one of my top priorities. In Terre-Neuve, there are numerous talented young students who are unable to pursue education due to financial constraints. Alongside working with HANWASH, I strive to distribute school supplies such as backpacks and repair classrooms to support children in receiving an education. Additionally, I make efforts to educate others about the commendable work Rotary is doing for the community.

I consider myself an individual who acts. I dislike idleness and prefer being part of the solution. Working as a team and witnessing successful project completions brings me immense satisfaction. I eagerly look forward to maintaining this proactive outlook during my term as President.

Obdias Orélus – President 2023-24, Rotary Club of Pignon

I got involved with HANWASH and Rotary because I wanted to be part of a more effective solution for water access in Pignon. While we have other NGO involvement, we often encounter difficulties such as leaks and illegal connections. Because of the Rotary model, we are able to  Pignon take charge of fundraising, and contributing to the projects. We also hold meetings with authorities to advocate for our cause and demonstrate to the population that projects following this model will bring success. Indeed, this approach has proven to be effective, and citizens are satisfied with this approach.

In addition to HANWASH, we make contributions to polio funds and engage in projects with farmers, teaching them new crop-growing techniques and different farming methods. Furthermore, we have a program where nurses from the USA come to Haiti to educate prospective nurses on how to complete national exams and obtain licenses.

This year, I am enthusiastic about expanding the reach of these projects. I also aim to invest more in cholera relief, as it remains a significant problem. My ambition is for every house to have its own latrine, and I want to encourage greater involvement with HANWASH. As the manager of a hospital in Pignon, I am deeply committed to the health and well-being of my community, striving to provide equitable services for all.

Jean-Marc Brissau – President 2023-24, Rotary Club of Leogane

I became involved with Rotary in 2009 after completing my studies in the US. Realizing the significant amount of work needed in Haiti, I understood that this couldn't be accomplished by just one person. Hence, I decided to participate in the program and took a keen interest in organizations like HANWASH. In 2009, I gathered a group of people and founded the club.

Apart from launching initiatives to provide clean water to the residents of Leogane, I have actively engaged in various other areas. Education holds a special place in my heart, and I played a role in establishing a school that caters to children from low-income backgrounds. Additionally, I am involved in child health, as Leogane has often borne the brunt of floods and hurricanes, necessitating extra support for the children in the area.

This year, my focus is on advancing the water projects that have already been initiated, which includes securing grants to kickstart the development process. Moreover, I aim to continue funding other projects related to health and education throughout the year. For me, a day isn't fulfilling unless I extend a helping hand to someone else. I believe in giving whatever I can, whether it's offering a little advice or direct assistance. This positive attitude is a driving force that will guide me in my projects this year.

Céline Joseph – President 2023-24, Rotary Club of Cap-Haïtien

I joined Rotary because of my strong commitment to serving both my local community and those in need abroad. My intention was to actively participate and provide support to those who are most vulnerable, aligning with Rotary's seven strategic axes.

During my tenure as President, I have been actively involved in numerous projects, and our most recent undertaking involves building a roof for a community center in Cap Haitian. This particular initiative will greatly benefit the children in the area, providing them with a safe and useful space. Additionally, I am consistently engaged in the projects at HANWASH and eagerly anticipate their development. These accomplishments reflect the goals I set for this year.

As a leader, I collaborate closely with the Assistant Governor (AG), my community, and commissioners. I strive to engage club members whenever we embark on new projects. For instance, we have an event scheduled for this Tuesday, July 25th, aimed at raising donations for the Justinian University Hospital. Moving forward, I am enthusiastic about continuing such projects in partnership with District 7020. I pride myself on being a hard worker and demonstrating great discipline. My eagerness to remain actively involved and drive progress in my community remains undeterred.

Jean-Clergé Durand – President 2023-24, Rotary Club of Les Cayes

I got involved with Rotary because of its direct impact on the community I live in. Being part of this organization allows me to collaborate with different commissions, plan meetings, set goals, and establish objectives for the year.

This year, I have a lot to accomplish. One of my key projects involves implementing a lighting initiative for the police stations in Les Cayes, ensuring their effective operation. We are also organizing a fundraiser for HANWASH to raise awareness and financial support for potential new projects in the commune of Cavaillon. Another significant effort is underway to provide benches for students, facilitating a better learning environment. Recently, we also hosted a conference focusing on women's health, emphasizing the importance of the social aspects of Rotary.

The sense of belonging and support I receive from my fellow club members is what truly makes this commitment rewarding for me. The genuine camaraderie within Rotary enriches the experience, and I am dedicated to continuing my efforts in contributing positively to our community.

Let's celebrate the dedication and hard work of Presidents Fristcat, Obdias, Jean-Marc, Céline, and Jean-Clergé as they champion cleaner water and brighter futures in Haiti.

Stay tuned for our September newsletter, where we'll introduce you to the District Governors who are guiding the course of these impactful initiatives.

HANWASH Leadership Changes

With the start of a new Rotary year, there are some new faces within HANWASH leadership. Over the last year, we have been working to strengthen the Haitian voice in our leadership and governance structure from our project activities in the field, to our Subcommittee structure, right up to our Board of Directors. This effort reflects our organizational goals and core values, which include fostering locally-led decision-making and cultivating a collaborative atmosphere which welcomes anyone or any organization interested in joining the HANWASH Initiative.

HANWASH Team from Haiti meets with Haitian Diaspora in St. Croix

Greetings from Rotary International District 7020! As we continue our journey of fostering strong bonds across ten Caribbean countries and 16 beautiful islands, we are thrilled to share the heartwarming moments from our recent District Conference.

In our diverse district, it's not always easy to meet and connect with each other due to the significant travel distances and costs. However, we found a solution for our District Conference, which we call – Home Hospitality! This is where Rotarians in the hosting island have Rotarians from the visiting islands to their home, favorite restaurant, or venue for dinner. It was a wonderful way to meet new friends and reconnect with those Rotarians we haven’t seen in a while.

During the conference in St. Croix, something truly special unfolded: a local Haitian diaspora group known as the Haitian Solidarity of the Virgin Islands, hosted a memorable Home Hospitality. Here, members of the Haiti Liaison & D7020 Engagement Subcommittees, along with Executive Director Ryan Rowe, engaged in meaningful conversations with Haitian residents of St Croix about Rotary and HANWASH. A shared bottle of Barbancourt Rhum, courtesy of the Haiti Liaison Chair and Steering Committee Chair, Fritz Pierre-Louis, added an extra touch of warmth to the gathering.

There was a very lively discussion about HANWASH with many questions asked and much information shared. There are a few people from the organization that are interested in joining Rotary and everyone is interested in doing what they can to help HANWASH and giving back to their native homeland. We were truly inspired to witness the growing interest in Rotary from some of the organization's members, and the collective determination to support HANWASH's vision of a better future for Haiti. Together, we explored the possibility of a future fundraiser, a testament to our shared commitment to making a positive impact.

HANWASH Team from Haiti meets with Haitian Diaspora in St. Croix
