President's Message

Catherine Sturtz

As we welcome the start of 2025, we want to take a moment to reflect on our shared accomplishments and look forward to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead for our business educators community. It is truly an honor to represent business education, and we are grateful for your continued dedication to advancing excellence in business education.

Looking back at 2024, we saw incredible progress in fostering collaboration, innovation, and professional development. Through our events, workshops, and networking opportunities, we have strengthened the ties that bind us and deepened our impact in the classroom and beyond. Our collective commitment to shaping the future of business education has never been stronger.

In 2025, we are poised to take our organization to new heights. We have an exciting year ahead, with an array of initiatives designed to support your growth, celebrate our achievements, and tackle the evolving challenges in business education. Whether through new curriculum updates, professional development resources, or the continued expansion of our network, there will be many opportunities for you to engage, learn, and contribute.

We encourage each of you to stay connected and actively participate in the programs and events that will shape the future of our profession. Your insights and feedback are invaluable as we work together to refine our strategies, embrace new trends, and ensure that business education remains dynamic and relevant.

As we begin this new year, we remain committed to supporting you in every step of your journey. Together, we can continue to empower our students and equip them with the skills and knowledge to thrive in an ever-changing global economy. Austrian-American Educator Peter Drucer said, "The best way to predict the future is to create it."

Here’s to a year of growth, collaboration, and success. Wishing you all a prosperous and fulfilling 2025!

Virtual Enterprise (VE) is a hands-on, career-focused program which provides students with the opportunity to engage in real-world business experiences. Students develop essential leadership, professional, and technology skills through hands-on, immersive, work-based learning experiences. Teachers become consultants as students manage their virtual business. Working in departments, students manage day-to-day functions, produce key deliverables, assess growth, make decisions, respond to challenges, and participate in a variety of business-related events and activities. VE classrooms connect students around the world and turn the classroom into a vibrant, international workplace.

Key Components of the VE Program:

● Hands-on Learning: Students manage departments such as Administration, Accounting, Sales, Marketing, Human Resources, and IT in a simulated business environment. This experience provides practical experience and prepares students for future careers.

Global Interaction: Students engage in trade with student-run businesses worldwide, promoting cross-cultural awareness and understanding of the global economy.

Competitions: Students participate in New York State regional competitions, national and international competitions, including:

  • Business Plan Competition: Student executives present their business plans to professional judges, competing for a spot in the National Business Plan Championship, held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City.

  • Best Booth & Sales Pitch Competition: Students showcase and sell their products at numerous online and in-person trade shows held throughout the year, demonstrating their marketing and sales skills.

Real-world Experience: Students conduct market research, develop business plans, create annual reports, and experience financial market dynamics.

Collaborative Opportunities: Through partnerships with local colleges and businesses, students network and gain valuable exposure to industry professionals.

In summary, VE provides a comprehensive and immersive experience in business education, offering students practical skills and knowledge that are highly valued in the workforce. It prepares them for both college and future careers by giving them real-world challenges and opportunities for personal growth.

Financial Literacy Requirement Update from Michael LaMastra at the

State Education Department:

"At the November 4, 2024 Board of Regents Meeting, the Board of Regents was presented with a proposed strategic plan to implement the four transformations proposed to New York’s graduation requirements. The presentation includes a proposed timeline and strategic plan. The plan, as it stands, anticipates that financial literacy instruction will be required for students beginning with the 2026-2027 school year and that the cohort entering ninth grade in 2027-2028 will be required to earn one credit of CTE which may include financial literacy. Details can be found on the November Board of Regents Presentation.

It is anticipated that more information will be made available at a later date. Questions in the interim may be directed to gradmeasures@nysed.gov<mailto:gradmeasures@nysed.gov>."

This may sound great for Business Teachers, but some schools are already indicating that they will be fulfilling the requirement through the Social Studies department. It is incumbent on every one of us to fight for our CTE classes and show the importance of our certification. We are including a form survey in our Newsletter to find out what our members are teaching. Please submit your answers to us. Strength in numbers!
