HARC Meeting: Migration Past and Present in the Jewish and Islamic Faiths

At HARC's June meeting, we welcome Basheer Azizi, President of the Islamic Center of Hagerstown, to talk about the history and present reality of migration among people of Islamic faith and Rabbi Mark Perman of Congregation B’Nai Abraham to share the history and present reality of migration among Jewish people. With many immigrants seeking refuge right here in Washington County, we’ll look at this topic through a faith lens. Join us for lunch and fellowship, followed by the program. Lunch will be provided by our host, Reach of Washington County, with a free-will offering basket.  RSVP requested by Friday, June 9 at noon.  Learn more and get parking info.

Air Conditioners wanted for Refugee Families

As hot weather approaches, the Refugee Welcome Network (RWN) is seeking window air conditioner units for refugee families. Can be used in good condition or new. Please contact Kathy at  [email protected] and we'll connect you to one of the volunteers who is helping with the project.

2023 Juneteenth Celebration-Hagerstown kicks off on June 16 and 17. The event organizers will do a Socks and Underwear Drive for Children in Need this year. The aim is to provide all Washington County essential clothing, personal care items, and educational supplies. Nonprofit organizations are welcome to perform outreach for this event. Highlights are a Believer's Unity Walk Saturday at 10:00 am, a HARC table Saturday from 10-3 (promote your congregation/events!), a children's games area, and an educational piece Friday evening.

Participants can look forward to scenic views, water & Gatorade refills along the way, a delicious lunch and fellowship, and supporting a great cause. Prizes for top fundraising teams and individuals, nature & bird scavenger hunts, and more. All proceeds benefit HARC and the MIcah's Backpack program. HARC is once again working compiling a monthly (June-August) calendar of free and low-cost VBS & summer activities for children and families. Free Adult Mental Health First Aid Course - June 23

The Adult Mental Health First Aid course is an 8-hour program appropriate for anyone 18 years and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health related crisis or problem. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions. The adult course teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help an individual in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, select interventions and provide initial help, and connect people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.
