At HARC's June meeting, we welcome Basheer Azizi, President of the Islamic Center of Hagerstown, to talk about the history and present reality of migration among people of Islamic faith and Rabbi Mark Perman of Congregation B’Nai Abraham to share the history and present reality of migration among Jewish people. With many immigrants seeking refuge right here in Washington County, we’ll look at this topic through a faith lens. 2023 Juneteenth Celebration-Hagerstown kicks off on June 16 and 17. The event organizers will do a Socks and Underwear Drive for Children in Need this year. The aim is to provide all Washington County essential clothing, personal care items, and educational supplies. Nonprofit organizations are welcome to perform outreach for this event. The Adult Mental Health First Aid course is an 8-hour program appropriate for anyone 18 years and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health related crisis or problem. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions. The adult course teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help an individual in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, select interventions and provide initial help, and connect people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.
