Career Corner: Showcasing Skills Gained from Academic Courses

Skills can be developed through more than just work and professional experience. They can be gained through the courses taken in your undergraduate degree.

Composition courses prepare students for various forms of writing they will encounter in the professional world by building analytical, and organizational skills, and teaching them how to communicate ideas effectively and confidently. Language courses help students navigate different communication styles. Culture courses develop global awareness, critical thinking, and prepare student to connect across cultures, which leads them to thrive in a diverse workplaces.

Reflection is an important piece when it comes to identifying skills. When identifying skills you have gained after completing a course, ask yourself:

  • What did I learn that I can apply outside the classroom? What software or tools did I use?
  • Did my existing skills like decision-making, public speaking, or teamwork improve?
  • Can I list these skills on my resume or reference classroom examples in an interview?
  • What challenges did I overcome?
