This is one of the most unique campouts HATS has ever taken! We will be camping and rock climbing at the famous Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge near Lawton, Oklahoma, a 60,000 acre area containing herds of bison, elk, longhorn cattle, and white-tailed deer. All a mere three hour drive from Dallas!
We have visited and climbed the area several times and it is one of the most unusual places we have ever seen. The mountains are the remains of volcanic cores and molten lava, forming a distinctive red granite. It offers some of the finest rock climbing between the Ozarks and the Rocky Mountains. With the good-quality granite, multi-pitch routes, wilderness setting and agreeable weather, even if you and your daughter don't climb, this is an adventure you must experience!
It is about a 3 hour drive from Dallas to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. We will be staying at a 160 acre church camp, just outside the refuge. We will get detailed information to you regarding campsite directions a few weeks before the camping weekend.
