BATON ROUGE – Today, HB 245, the Abortion-Until-Birth Constitutional Amendment, was defeated in the House Civil Law and Procedure Committee.
Benjamin Clapper, Executive Director of Louisiana Right to Life, said the following about the amendment's defeat: “We are pleased that legislators rejected the dangerous Abortion-Until-Birth Amendment in committee. If it had passed, the amendment would have legalized abortion until birth and forced Louisiana citizens to pay for abortion with their tax-dollars. It would even prevent parents from consenting to their minor daughter’s abortion. This amendment was too extreme for Louisiana.”
Of the many powerful witnesses that testified against the Amendment, 9-year old Hopkins Inzina of Lafayette bravely shared, "My mom could have been aborted, but was not. I am glad she was not, because she is the best mom. If she was [aborted], none of my brothers or sisters would be here, including me."
Dr. Kim Hardey, a recently-retired OB-GYN from Lafayette, and Jennifer Maggio, the CEO of The Life of a Single Mom, were also among the witnesses against the amendment.
Louisiana Right to Life (LARTL), established in 1970, works through education, legislation, inspiration and service to restore the right to life in Louisiana by opposing abortion, euthanasia, and other life destroying actions.
