TORAH STUDY
Join us for Torah study this Shabbat at 10am with Rabbi Penzner.
We will study two psalms.
Please find Psalm 137 and Psalm 126 and bring translations, commentary, and your questions.

You may recognize one or both of these psalms. I have chosen them with the upcoming observance of Tisha B'Av in mind. On that summer fast day (Wednesday evening July 29 - Thursday July 30), we recall and feel the sense of loss at the destruction of Jerusalem as a seminal and tragic moment in Jewish history. These two psalms speak to that event, giving us two different perspectives. Please read 137 before 126, for reasons which will be apparent.

Everyone is welcome to Torah study, regardless of your Jewish knowledge or background. There will be something for everyone to learn and share!

TISHA B'AV
Tisha B'Av: A Night of Brokenness
Wednesday evening, July 29
8:00 pm

The fast and observance of Tisha B'Av strikes a chord this year when we are immersed in a time of brokenness. As we recall the great traumas of Jewish history, beginning with the Destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, we are invited to mourn together communally all that we have suffered and all that we have lost.

Rabbi Barbara Penzner and Cantor Louis Treitman will lead us in song, prayer, learning, and meditation to face the brokenness in our lives today: the brokenness of the pandemic and its responses, the enduring plague of racism and its violent manifestations, threats to the foundations of good government, and all that gives us a sense of security in our country and in our future. What can we gain by pouring out our hearts together ? What does our tradition have to teach us as we consider that Judaism has survived for 2500 years since that first Destruction?

*HBT "Ma Nishtanah"
Ma nishtanah opens the 4 questions of the Passover Seder. It's not a question, but a statement of surprise: "How different is this!"

HBT will use Ma Nishtanah to let you know about events, programs and meetings sponsored by HBT in the next few days.

We will also share resources in the Jewish community that can supplement what we are offering.
