HC Alumni News - Experiential Learning
Dr. Steve Livingston and Globe Trek students rang in 2020 in Oman!
Each year a group of students has the opportunity to work with Dr. Livingston to plan a trip to learn more about the culture of a country. These trips are not the typical "grand tour"; they are carefully planned to take "trekkers" off the beaten path to learn more about the unique nature of a place and understand their faith and traditions. This year our Globe Trekkers chose Oman, a beautiful country, with a rich history, on the Arabian peninsula. Through Omani friends and a well-developed itinerary, the 18 HC students learned about the tradition of hospitality and the Islamic religion by visiting mosques, Bedouin encampments, the Royal Cavalry of the Sultanate of Oman and private homes, while also swimming in the crystal clear waters of desert springs and watching baby turtles scamper to the sea.

Here is what some of our students had to say:
" The Houston Christian Globe Trek to Oman was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In our large group we travelled to a country which not many Americans would consider as it is in the Middle East, yet our experience was phenomenal. We learned that Oman is not only a welcoming country, but a country filled with happy and curious people who went out of their way to make small talk with the group and learn about who we were and why we were there. Accompanying the overwhelming friendliness of the people, the entire country was extremely safe and clean. I feel as though I have a better insight into the cultures of the world, and that I could tackle any multicultural problems which present themselves in the future workplace. Lastly, I bonded with my fellow students across grade levels, grew closer to Christ, and learned more about who I really am upon receiving the opportunity to attend this amazing trip." --  Hadley Krummel '20
"Oman was an amazing and beautiful experience that I shared with 20 other people from HCHS. In Oman, I learned how to barter in little markets, and I even got an Omani Soccer Jersey set. I've also learned that everyone is kind and helpful by giving you water if you ask for it, and they even bring Omani coffee and dates as an offering. Oman has immediately become my beloved place to visit around the globe." --  Isla Ritchie '22
"The Globe Trek trip to Oman was an experience of a lifetime! Our group studied, met, and prepared for the trip from August until December, when we left the day after Christmas! No one in the group knew what to really expect as many of us had never even heard of the country of Oman until this trip. Some students had never left the US before! Once we arrived, we discovered that Oman is known as "the Switzerland of the Arabian peninsula." It is a safe and secure country with beaches, sea turtles, watering holes, deserts, and mountains to explore. Not only that, the country is filled with kind, fun loving citizens who loved us and fed us the most amazing and delicious foods! GlobeTrek Oman was a life changing experience as we grew closer as a group and closer to other citizens of the world through appreciation and recognition of how we are similar and different in many ways, yet complementary!" --  Dr.   Karen Arnold , Instructor, Parent & Alum Parent '15 & '19
Since 2009 students have traveled to: China, Croatia, India, New Zealand, Oman, Peru, South Africa, Turkey, & Zambia.

Globe Trek is a special part of many HC students' experiences. If you have a memory from your Trek, please send us a note and we will highlight your experiences and memories in a later edition of the Alumni News.
