HC Alumni News
March comes in like a lion, goes out like a lamb…or here at HC, in like a dragon and out like a puppy! This month we kept up our annual tradition of celebrating our nations with International Day and the always-inspiring dragon dance, and ended the month with our newer senior privilege of bringing a puppy to school. In between we had the first dates for the spring play, "A Murder is Announced," acted out by the varsity players and a much-needed spring break!

A year ago, we could not have imagined that our two-week, post spring break shut-down would turn into a year-long pandemic. We are proud to share that our community and campus have successfully implemented safety procedures that have allowed our students to not only be in class and on-campus all year, but also have the activities that help build memories and community. We are truly blessed with flexible and creative faculty and staff who have ensured that students have not only been in class, but also able to play sports, participate in clubs, enjoy lunch and interact together safely all year.

Our admissions team displayed a great feat of flexibility with the "Big Event," HC's annual new student event to celebrate our newly admitted Mustangs, which includes the class of 2025 and transfers! Our campus hosted many "pods" of applicants and enrollees to HC to meet future fellow students, teachers, and visit the campus. Witnessing the Robotics team, the choir, the band and others in action always helps our accepted students see where they may find their own path here at HC. If you know of a student who is looking for his or her high school experience, please encourage them to consider HC! It is not too late!

Looking forward, we will soon be onboarding our graduating seniors, the Class of 2021, into HC Connects, so that they can start reaching out to our alumni for advice. Many thanks to all 185 alumni who have already registered and indicated they are "willing to help" our Mustangs! If you are interested in networking and mentoring our students - check out HC Connects TODAY!

We will be wishing several faculty members a happy retirement at the end of the school year. Diane Creekmore, Jim Kelley and Colonel Tom Wilson will be missed and we would like to pass along any memories and messages that you may have for them as they begin their new chapters. Stay tuned for more information about ways to recognize them and their impact.
International Day & Missions Emphasis Week

While there was not a smorgasbord of multinational delicacies this year, our students' talents and skills were again represented at International Day.

From Vietnamese rap to Spanish ballads and the beloved dragon dance, the event was another great success!

Our students did a fantastic job preparing for the day!
Alumni Chapel Speaker
This month our students welcomed Leigh (Davidson) Kohler '94 to chapel on March 25th. Leigh is the co-founder and president of the Freedom Church Alliance. Her own personal journey in the fight for justice began after being heartbroken while learning about the reality of human trafficking. Leigh is a knowledgeable and passionate speaker about God’s mercy and justice. She has spoken to numerous audiences on the issue of human trafficking and the Church’s call to bring the light of the gospel into the darkness.

Mustang Stories
Anna Votaw '18
"After graduating from Houston Christian in 2018, I was fortunate enough to attend The University of Texas. Throughout my time at UT Austin, I have held a variety of internships while balancing a full load of classes. Last summer, I interned for CRE Insurance Solutions, where I gained extensive knowledge and experience in the commercial real estate realm. Along with assisting senior management with analysis and evaluation of structuring and regulatory relief strategies for structured commercial real estate lending transactions, I additionally learned to perform due diligence, property valuation risk assessments, and extensive financial modeling. I learned how to draft underwriting memorandums, and to review legal documents to assess risk.

Additionally, I began interning in the Texas House of Representatives in February of 2020, although the beginning of my internship was cut short due to the impact of COVID-19. I was luckily able to return this year and recently have worked as a Legislative Aide during this Legislative Session. Working on the 2021 Session has been particularly interesting, especially with a new Speaker of the House, the complications that have arisen with COVID-19, the recent snowstorm that wiped out a vast amount of the electricity and water throughout Texas, and Abbott's announcement of his five emergency items. This year, I have also interned for PaperCity Houston, where I was given the opportunity to write my own article on an art installation in Austin named Wonderspaces. The interactive pop-up space was started by two marines and provides a safe, clean space for artists to showcase their work amid the current pandemic. Check out my article!"

Anna Votaw '18 plans to go to law school after graduation. She is currently studying for the LSAT. This semester she is interning at the Capitol for Texas State Representative - District 24 - Dr. Greg Bonnen.
