That's a wrap! Yearbooks have been signed, caps have been thrown, and the last finals have been graded! We are so proud of our students and our teachers for making the absolute best out of their academic year in the midst of a pandemic. We successfully carried out a full year of instruction - with the biggest disruption being an unprecedented freeze!
Our wonderful Mustang Parent Council (MPC) has done it's best to ensure that we all took time to "smell the roses" this spring. Teachers were celebrated with a week of treats before exams, then the MPC encouraged study breaks and surprised our students with bubbles and popsicles as they toiled through exam weeks!
We are thrilled to welcome our 23rd graduating class of 2021 into the Alumni Association! These seniors are resilient and poised to lead no matter what! The class of 2021 entered 9th grade with Hurricane Harvey, handled a world-wide pandemic during their junior and senior years at HC and graduated showing strength and adaptability. This spring our community was able to return to the in-person events that make the HC experience so unique. From the Junior Red Shirt Ceremony, to the Senior Brick Reveal, to award ceremonies, prom, and commencement, our students have experienced all of the great annual traditions that went virtual just last May.
Graduation was held on May 21st as a live event at Houston's First Baptist Church, which felt like a homecoming. We celebrated our 124 graduates and their families. We heard from our valedictorian and salutatorian, Cristian Gualy ’21 and Emily Mallin ‘21, and the Commencement Address from Jamey Rootes, former president of Houston Texans, who had extremely wise words to share with our students. We witnessed our math teacher, Regan Ray exuberantly accept the Excellence in Teaching award, Ashley Kearns '21 accept the Servant Leadership Award and our school nurse, Trish McGreevy accept the Civitas Award in honor of the blessings, love and leadership that she shares with HC every day.
Take a moment to catch up on all the events that took place this spring and let us know how you may like to get involved next year!

The Bush Center
for Scholars & Leaders
The Bush Center for Scholars and Leaders Organizational Leadership Class recently took a trip to Rice's Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen (OEDK). The class was studying innovation and saw first hand how students solve real world challenges.
HC is lucky to have Dr. Maria Oden, OEDK's Director and teaching professor (and current parent,) as a mentor and guide.

On May 14, we celebrated and honored 60 years of teaching and leadership with Diane Creekmore (English), Colonel Tom Wilson (Leadership), and Jim Kelley (Science) who will all be retiring on July 1, 2021.
Thank you to all alumni, faculty, staff, and family members who sent cards or shared memories with these three respected teachers. We created special memory albums and they were overwhelmed by your sweet notes and remembrances!

Coffee with Col. Wilson & Nancy
|
Thanks to all of our alumni and family members who joined Col. Wilson and Nancy for a Zoom coffee on May 6th!
We all enjoyed strolling down memory lane, seeing their son in California make a cameo, and reminiscing on the many roles both Col. Wilson and Nancy have served in at HC. Do you remember that Nancy taught Bible at one point?

"I recently received a BFA in Theatre with a Concentration in Acting and a Minor in Liberal Arts from the Blount Scholars Program at the University of Alabama. While in undergrad, I was involved with Chi Omega Fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega, The Flourish, and Crimson Stage. I was also in two shows this last year that my school was able to produce virtually: The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, in which I was cast as Tubal, and Antigone by Sophocles in which I was cast as Eurydice.
I decided to go to grad school because of the direction the theatre industry was going in due to Covid-19. While I always wanted to go to grad school, I always thought it would be later. I’m very thankful, though, that I found Rose Bruford College in Sidcup, England. Their program allows me to study acting in addition to one or two other focuses— such as directing, playwriting or musical theatre. My first year will be spent in the UK and the second year will take place in Waterford, Connecticut at the National Theatre Institute!"
