 HC Alumni News - Volunteering!
Houston Christian alumni have a huge heart for missions - and this love of service stems from travel and mission opportunities offered by the school. HC students are encouraged throughout the year to give back to our community, at home and abroad. This summer we are highlighting one of this summer's student trips and highlight how one of our alumni is giving back to our global community.

Our 2019 grads and alumni are spread across the globe serving their communities in a myriad of ways. From Arkansas to Africa and many places in between (and around) we have alumni seeking their calling in varying and interesting ways. Be sure to tell us about what you and your classmates are doing to serve your community!
Following Your Call
Jake Fritsche '18
Sophomore
University of Texas, Austin
McCombs School of Business - Finance

Before entering college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a service organization and Christian ministry. This year, I volunteered at the UT Microfarm, a local farm managed by students in order to highlight the importance of sustainability and provide care for the environment. Every weekend, I seeded, planted, and harvested crops to ensure the quality of the farm was maintained. Furthermore, I am a Young Life leader for high school boys at Regents High School in Austin, where I spend time every week going to their sporting events, eating lunch with them at school, and leading a devotional at my house.

This summer, I had the opportunity to work as a counselor for young boys at a Christian sports camp called Camp Ozark in Mount Ida, Arkansas. I lived in a cabin with these 12 boys for two weeks and had the time of my life ministering to them, as well as creating an incomparable experience for them at camp! While at camp, I was also a certified Ropes Course Instructor and Baseball Specialist, where I helped kids conquer their fear of heights and gain confidence in their athletic abilities. As a result of my experience, I personally learned about sacrifice and grew significantly in maturity and patience.

My transition between high school and this past year at UT was exceptionally smooth due to my outstanding teachers and rigorous curriculum of HC. Academically, I finished my freshman year with a 4.00 GPA and was just recently admitted to the McCombs School of Business, where I will declare my major in Finance this fall. Socially, I am a member of a fraternity on campus, Beta Upsilon Chi, which has provided me an incredible community of people and allowed me to develop some of the closest friendships I have today. This past spring, I was appointed the Vice President Social Chair, where I coordinate events and meetings for my fraternity, as well as correspond with other sororities.
International Student Leadership Program
The Bush Center for Scholars & Leaders
Shanghai, China

The International Student Leadership Program (ISLP) is in its 6th year and is a multi-week program. International students learn about Leadership from HC's talented teachers and leaders either at their home campus or at HC in a total immersion program. Since inception, HC has welcomed students from China, Argentina, and Costa Rica. This summer The Bush Center selected four HC students to serve as Student Ambassadors on the ISLP trip to China. The role of student ambassadors is to encourage and foster a sense of community between the ISLP students and HC students. This year, Peyton Erck ‘20 , Daniella Nassar ‘21 , Greg Fossati ’20 , and Christina Funk ‘19 were selected to teach a class about the 5 Dimensions of Leadership to our Chinese students enrolled in ISLP.

Greg Fossati ’20 says, “I wanted to be an ISLP ambassador for a few reasons. First, it seemed like an excellent opportunity to travel around the world and experience different cultures while contributing positively to individual’s lives and hopefully through that help a community. Second, I viewed it as an excellent chance to practice my mandarin and continue to develop my language skills. Finally, it was an opportunity to teach, a previously unexplored avenue.

What excited me most was the relationships with the students. They were eager and ready to learn and really connected with you individually. I was genuinely excited to interact and see where their minds went. One particularly surprising aspect was the dual culture shock. Not only was I immersed in Chinese culture but through our American style classroom teaching we were bringing a whole new cultural experience to them. This made for interesting and fun interactions and a mutual learning between both parties. You often found yourself learning just as much as you were teaching.”

While in Suzhou, The Bush Center and student ambassadors were visited by four local ISLP alumni who completed the leadership course on HC’s campus this past January. These Chinese students heard that The Bush Center would be in town and wanted to take the time to thank everyone for how much ISLP built up their confidence. The improvement was immediately apparent from their public speaking to their increased English language proficiency. They are no longer self-conscious about being the first to speak up!
Leadership in Colorado
20 HC students went hiking for a week in Colorado. The trip was led by HC's Michael Bredeweg, Caroline Nixson, Ryan Klasen '04, and Kelsey Simmons (Young Life).
HC students are encouraged to work as a team, to learn respect for God's creation, and of course, perseverance!
Each student came away from the wilderness trip with the knowledge that they are capable of anything!
HC⚡DC is gearing up for a great year of community building events!

Keep an eye out for their first event Friday, September 20 where the Dads Club will host a cook-out at our Football Frenzy!

Football Frenzy is a middle school preview night and our first football game of the season.
