My first impression of HC was how genuine the staff and students were. It was honestly so refreshing and I was able to make fast friends that have lasted over a decade now. The classes I took helped shape me as I grew in knowledge. Mrs. Paxton's English class, developed my love for reading and writing even more so, and AP Euro with Dr. Carson, expanded my understanding of history and social conflicts. I feel so much of what I love and do now as a semi-functioning adult, started in those classrooms. My Bible classes became much more sacred to me as I saw staff and students sincerely try to live like Christ. Instead of simply memorizing scripture for a grade, it began to make impressions on my soul and how I viewed the world around me.
After graduating from college, I moved back to Houston and started working at a tax firm. It was a tough job where I worked on quality control reviews and edits. I saved enough to afford the cost of a mission trip. God took me to Kampala, Uganda in November 2014. It was there I actually became a Christian - I realized I had heard about Christ for so many years, being brought up in a Christian home and attending church, but I was not living as I wanted to live in Christ. It was on that trip I decided to follow Christ and it truly changed my life.
I came back to Houston and joined Elijah Rising - a Houston-based abolitionist movement where we go right into the depths of human trafficking in our city. I also joined the
International Justice Mission (
as an advocate. L
ast year, I was asked to be the Prayer Coordinator for the first Houston-based IJM Volunteer Team. Our team is working to raise awareness about modern day slavery.
I doubt I would have the same interest in social activism, history, language, or the scriptures if I did not have the incredible teachers and staff at HC investing in me. And now, my husband and I live in a house we just bought, just a few streets north of the high school. I see HC almost every day and I'm thankful for my time there and all the things God has done since.
