Changes coming to Medicaid enrollees starting April 1st!

Between 35,000 and 90,000 Nebraskans are at risk of losing Medicaid starting in the spring.

In January, Congress passed a 1.7 trillion spending bill, but the bill could mean changes to some Medicaid recipients, the Health Center Association of Nebraska said in a press release. The change in the Medicaid program comes as the federal government works to roll back pandemic protections. Congress had previously barred states from kicking people off Medicaid due to the pandemic but that is changing soon.

The state of Nebraska has a plan but health advocates say many in Nebraska could still lose coverage, HCAN said. More than 380,000 Nebraskans are currently enrolled in Medicaid.
As of April 1, states can “unwind” the Medicaid continuous coverage requirement. Unwinding refers to the process of reviewing the eligibility of every person enrolled in Medicaid in the state to determine if they are still eligible.

Community Health Centers face Critical Needs - Op-Ed
featured in Nebraska Examiner, written by Tami Smith, CEO, Heartland Health Center

As the CEO at Heartland Health Center in Grand Island, I witness first-hand the impact our health center has in the community. Heartland is a Federally Qualified Health Center — one of seven in Nebraska and 1,400 nationally. We provide primary medical, dental and behavioral health to all, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.

We further support our community through wraparound services such as transportation, translation, and assistance with enrolling in medical and economic assistance programs. In addition, we collaborate with partners including schools, local public health departments and community organizations to ensure that we are addressing all of the social barriers that affect our patients’ health.

Heartland Health Center opened its doors in 2014, serving 840 patients our first year. In 2021, we served 6,695 patients — a 700% increase. We have also expanded services to the town of Ravenna, providing a one-stop location for medical and behavioral health care.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month which brings awareness of the need for people to access life-saving resources that prevent, detect, and treat colorectal cancer (CRC). Early-age onset CRC diagnoses are rising by 2% annually with well over 100,000 new cases each year, and by 2030 it is predicted that CRC will be the leading cause of death in people under age 50. CRC is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men and women combined.

DEI DIGEST
New! HCAN Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Peer Learning Network!

HCAN is building a peer learning group of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) staff and champions from all health centers. The space will be used to provide education, trainings, best practices, other resources, and plenty of discussion to help health centers advance their SDOH work.

We would love to have as many SDOH champions from each health center participate in the group as possible. As we all know, SDOH efforts touch every aspect of patient care, this group will be extremely diverse and include staff and management from all health center departments. If you are interested in joining the peer learning group or just want to be included on communications, please fill out this FORM. The next peer learning group meeting is Thursday, April 14th at 12pm CST.

For questions, reach out to Samantha at sdw@hcanebraska.org.
