Interfaith Alliance on Poverty Connects with HCAO
On Dec 2, HCAO President Tom Sincic and Faith Caucus Chair Rick Staggenborg presented to members of the Interfaith Poverty Alliance. The focus was on the relationship between healthcare, poverty, houselessness and what is referred to as the "health-poverty trap". Rising rents and rising health care costs such a deadly combination.
Rick reviewed the opportunities to get involved with our Faith Caucus and HCAO efforts.
If you or someone you know wants to get involved with the Faith Caucus contact Rick at faith@hcao.org.

Important Oregon Governor's Races
and publicly-funded universal healthcare
Did you know that for the 2022 Primary there are 8 Democratic and 10 Republican candidates listed at Ballotpedia?
If a candidate is non-affiliated, they will only be in the general election in November.
Who is Governor in 2023 is extremely important. Will that person be ready to sign the bill that creates the Oregon Health Plan? Check in on the positions of candidates on universal healthcare by going to their campaign website. Contact the candidates and make your position clear.
Right now,, when the legislature is not in session, is the ideal time to make an appointment with your current state senator and state rep. and express your thoughts and find out where they stand on single-payer universal healthcare. It's easy in this virtual world.

National Scene--Actions to Take
Since the House passed the Build Back Better package with the remaining crumbs, the focus has turned to the Senate to ensure that the package passes including Medicare drug price negotiation and hearing benefits intact with some additional pressure to improve on the House version. Majority Leader Schumer has indicated that Build Back Better may be considered the week of December 13.
An important time sensitive request from Partner Public Citizen:
Urge your Democratic Reps. to join this sign-on letter (here) by Rep. Jayapal and Rep. Bush urging Majority Leader Schumer to retain the insulin payment cap in the Build Back Better Act and to expand the cap to uninsured people. The deadline for signatories is COB on Monday, December 6, so please reach out to Democratic House offices and urge them to sign on ASAP.

Beautiful Small Businesses Shout Out for Health Care for All
Lover of Quartz, Nadine: "As Americans there’s an unspoken level of freedom we lose due to our healthcare system. We don’t get to play, explore, create, and follow our passions. We all know someone who stays in a job they don’t like, works just for the benefits, or avoids retirement due to medical expenses. Even worse, there are people who are stuck in poverty because losing OHP would cause irreversible damage to their health and finances.
I support universal healthcare so people have more opportunities to follow their passions, do work that brings them joy."
Illustrator and small business owner, Nora Sherwood says this: "I support universal healthcare because it's a more stable economic model for healthcare delivery, and it does not cost more than our existing model. I also support universal healthcare because it will lower barriers for many people who need to access care."
Nora's beautiful work and business are found at:

Important Message on Jordan Cove LNG
from HCAO Member Organization
Physicians for Social Responsibility
"We have learned that Pembina, the Canadian company behind Jordan Cove LNG and the Pacific Connector fracked gas pipeline, have requested that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) vacate the authorizations issued to them in their proceedings.... Pembina has announced that it has given up future plans for Jordan Cove LNG and Pacific Connector in Oregon.... [This] is without a doubt a victory for a healthier Oregon, and our water and air will be cleaner tomorrow because of our work on this initiative."
We know that protecting our environment is essential to protecting our health. HCAO is thankful for the work of PSR.
