On February 13, 2025, Halifax Community College proudly hosted the 2025 Celebrating Black Excellence Program, an event dedicated to honoring African American heritage, leadership, and cultural contributions. A key highlight of the program was the unveiling of the 2025 USPS Black Heritage Stamp featuring legendary musician and songwriter Allen Toussaint. Toussaint’s legacy in jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock ‘n’ roll has left a lasting impact on American music, and we were honored to celebrate his contributions.
The event featured inspiring remarks from Jolly Manning, Band Director at Weldon High School, as well as reflections from Bettye Powell, a close friend of Toussaint. We also had the privilege of recognizing outstanding community members who have made a difference in Halifax and beyond.
Congratulations to Our Local African American Hero Award Recipients:
Gaynelle Byrd
Edna Fenner Powell

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this event such a success. Celebrating Black Excellence is not just about one moment—it is about recognizing and uplifting the individuals who shape our community every day.
