Looking for Volunteers to Help

with Outdoor Sign

Due to allergies, it's very difficult for Maria to change the outdoor sign on a weekly basis. We are looking for volunteers to help arrange the letters and put them up on the sign. It's usually done weekly on Mondays or Thursdays.

If you can help, please email Maria at HCC1752@gmail.com

Rev Paige's Corner: The Value of a Church

This week, Fred Malcolm and I attended the Hampstead Select Board meeting. We had been invited along with all the other clergy and representatives of churches in town. Historically, the town has been plowing and sanding church parking lots. This is not something I have encoutered in other towns. The question that often comes up for the Selectboard is whether they are using public funds for private benefit - which is not appropriate. In order to justify the use of town funds in this way, they have to justify that the town is receiving benefits quid pro quo for the service. And so we were all asked to come and explain how our churches benefitted the town in a way that was enough to justify the plowing benefit (which probably amounts to several thousand dollars of service each year if we paid a contractor.)

In my mind, this needed to be stated in very pratical ways about public benefit. We talked about the use of the Historical Commission Museum using our parking and our land for septic. We talked about Stepping Stones serving the community and also town school busses coming through. We talked about the space we make available to community groups such as scouts, recovery groups, the 45s and more.

It was interesting to hear what other churches in town were doing and how they served the wider community. One Selectboard member commented on how helpful the survey of activity was.

But one of the other pastors brought along copies of a study about how having strong and healthy religious communities benefit and strengthen a town. This was less about ways the community uses the church property and more about how having people nurtured in faith strengthens the wider community. I find myself thinking about Jesus' parable of the yeast in the bread - how this small amount of substance transforms the entire loaf of bread in dramatic ways. How do we as God's people bring our values of loving our neighbors, practicing justice and compassion, offering welcome and inclusion, growing in our ability to forgive into our town in ways that make Hampstead better for everyone?

In some of our vision conversations over the last year, we have expressed our desire to be a church that makes a positive impact on our community. The Selectboard asked us to quantify it which for me, at least, was thought provoking.

With blessings!

Rev Paige Besse-Rankin

Thanks to everyone who helped with our outdoor worship and picnic!

Thank you thank you thank you to all the walkers and donors who participated in this year’s Hampstead/Atkinson/Plaistow Crop Hunger Walk!  A little over $10,300 was raised which exceeded the goal of $8,500 by $1,800 – AWESOME!!!

Funds will go to Church World Service to help with global hunger and to St. Anne's Food Pantry to help with local hunger in the greater Hampstead area.

There were approximately 50 walkers from the four churches (St. Christopher’s Episcopal, Atkinson Congregational, St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church and Hampstead Congregational). It was quite a feat – and the organizing of the event was accomplished in just under two months. St. Christopher’s hosted and arranged all the logistics of the Crop Walk which included a silent auction, refreshments and the actual mapping of the walk route.

Again, a huge THANK YOU to everyone involved.

9am Worship begins September 7!

As we begin our new relationship with the Atkinson Congregational Church and begin sharing a pastor, our worship time will be changing. Beginning September 7, our worship time will move to 9 am. Atkinson will be moving their worship time to 10:30 am. The worship times will be evaluated in January. It has not been decided whether these times will be permanent or if we will alternate the times in the future.

There will be an exception to this new time. On Sunday, September 28, the two congregations will worship together at 10 am at HCC to celebrate the new covenant.

New Hampshire Bulletin published an article about a new program for school lunch supplies, NH Farms to School. This program supplies grant money for school food suppliers to buy products from NH farms. This summer, a pilot program provided $190,000 to assist school districts in buying meats and produce from local NH farms during the upcoming school year. The goal is to better understand how to make local purchases of food more practical for the farmers and schools. Exeter is the closest school district to us that is participating. See the full article below for more details.
