HCC's Bell Gets a Facelift

What's a new steeple without a working bell? After last summer's extensive renovation of our steeple, the Operations Team decided it was time to repair the bell. Repairs began on Monday and should take a couple of months. It'll be so nice to hear the church bells ringing throughout Hampstead again.

Rev Paige's Corner: Our Mission Field

There are a number of parables where Jesus teaches us using images of seeds and these are some of my favorites. We looked at some of them a couple of weeks ago from Mark 4. One aspect of these seed stories is the harvest phase which Jesus often suggests is the work of his followers. What does it look like to go out into the world and to harvest the seeds God has planted and grown?

One important shift over the last few decades has been about where the church understands the "mission field" to be. It used to be that mission funds and missionaries went to places far away - often cooperating with other churches in our denomination. But there is also growing understanding that there is mission work to be done closer to home - whether that is in terms of providing assistance for people who are struggling or whether that is in terms of sharing God's word and nurturing faith. (Dare I use a term that makes us all a little nervous: evangelism?)

I am very thankful for everyone who stayed after worship last Sunday for our second Transition Talk about "Who is our Neighbor?" We dug deep into some of the demographic materials about Hampstead. We also looked at what studies tell us about what folks are looking for in churches. Some asked if I could share a link for all of that information so here is a link to a folder with both the studies and the materials about each demographic group that are well represented in Hampstead.

Mission Insite Files

What is striking to me as I read through these materials is that how many are in fact spiritually hungry. But some are looking for different sorts of things in faith communities. Having a better understanding about some of those differences might make us more successful as God's laborors in a field in need of harvest.

Blessings and peace!

Transition Team: Question of the Week

Friends,

One of the tasks of the Transition Team is to gather background information that will assist the Search Committee in the preparation of our church profile. An effective church profile will provide a realistic view of where our church is going in the near future. The preparation of our church profile is important because it will help attract candidates for the “settled” pastor position who will bring the skills and enthusiasm we need to help us on our journey into the future.

The collection of this data requires much more than simple statistics or having the four transition team members sit around a table and review the questions that need to be answered. This data collection process benefits by having as many people in the congregation as possible participate.

Over the course of the next several weeks, the Transition Team (Rob Reeves, Barbara Wallack, Lynn D’Adamo and Rick Little) will share some of the questions from the Profile and hope that you will look at them, give them serious thought, and share your ideas and opinions with members of the team. You can speak with us one on one, or jot down your thoughts on paper and give it to us so that we can discuss that input at our regular meetings with Rev. Paige.

Here's the question for this week:

“What would your hope for the future of education in our church be?. How should we reach out to include all members of the congregation, not just children? Why is ongoing education important?”

Thanks so much for your involvement and feedback as the Transition Team moves forward with its work.

Calling all artistic and

talented friends!

As part of the Hampstead Garden Club's Garden Tour on July 13th, the Hampstead Congregational Church, UCC will be open as a rest stop, offering boxed lunches and hosting an Art in Bloom show in Hadley Hall. We will be welcoming many types of art to be submitted: paint, sculpture, drawing, photography and textiles.

All ages are welcome to display artwork. You will have the option of offering your piece for sale with a 10% commission going to the church capital campaign. Area floral designers will be interpreting the art in floral design. These may also be offered for sale with the same commission. Neither the art nor the floral piece is required to be for sale. If you are an artist and would like to participate with one, or multiple pieces, we are asking to have them submitted by June 30 so the floral designers can have time to plan their work. You may drop the pieces off at the church, or submit a clear photo by that day, with the art itself needed by July 12 for exhibition. Anyone interested submitting art or in doing a floral design, please contact Kari Allard by messenger for adult art and Terri Eddy Malcolm for kid’s art.

All are welcome, professionals and amateurs alike.

We are looking forward to making The Art in Bloom exhibit a fun community event as part of Hampstead's 275th anniversary celebration.

History Of the Djembe

The Modern Djembe Built by DrumConnection

The djembe is one of West Africa's best-known instruments. This goblet-shaped drum is traditionally carved from a single piece of African hardwood and topped with an animal skin as a drumhead. In western understanding, the drum belongs to the membranophone class of instruments in the percussion family.

The djembe drum is most likely about 400-800 years old and was created during the Malian Empire by the Mandé people. It spanned the modern-day countries of Senegal, southern Mauritania, Mali, northern Burkina Faso, western Niger, the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, the Ivory Coast and northern Ghana. The Mali Empire grew out of an area referred to by its contemporary inhabitants as Mande. Mande, named for its inhabitants the Mandinka (initially Manden’ka with “ka” meaning people of), comprised most of present-day northern Guinea and southern Mali. The empire was originally established as a federation of Mandinka tribes called the Manden Kurufa (literally Manden Federation), but it later became an empire ruling millions of people from nearly every ethnic group in West Africa.
