Rev Paige's Corner: Welcoming All Ages in Worship!

I have long been committed to making worship "kid friendly." But this can be a big challenge. We tend to sing hymns with lots and lots of words - many unfamiliar. Much of the service is geared for adults. Occassionally, we may design "intergenerational" worship, but this tends to be the exception rather than the norm. The end result is that kids are restless and bored or we send them out of worship. Then we wonder as they get older why most of no interest in coming back or staying in worship.

There is a new trend that many congregations are trying called "Pray-grounds." This is a special space set aside for kids in the sanctuary where they can quietly do activities that are related in theme to the service with their parents close by.

Here is a wonderful article on this trend by Debbie Gline-Allen: Introducing Pray-grounds

The Discipleship Team and The Worship Team have decided to try this in our own sanctuary along with offering Kid's bulletins with activities on the scripture for worship. This will not be replacing Sunday school but rather an addition to it.

Our hope is that kids will feel not only welcome in worship but also begin to absorb what worship is all about and value it as they grow.

We are performing a baptism this week. For each baptism, there is a part of the liturgy where the congregation is asked if they will promise to support the child, parents and godparents as the child grows in faith. Our hope is that things like "Pray-grounds" are another way we fulfil those promises.

Blessings!

A Word from Peace & Justice

There was an article in New Hampshire Bulletin about the challenges state lawmakers are facing as they work on solutions to the statewide housing shortages.

House Bill 1053 is “bold” in that it would allow any property owner to build residential housing in a commercial zone. Supporters claim that this is a way to fast-track mixed-use housing in New Hampshire. Rep. Eric Gallager (D-Concord) speaking in support said at the House Municipal and County Affairs Committee, “We need to loosen zoning restrictions to make it easier to build new housing or allow people to occupy existing structures. If you’ve got a business leaving, fine. That’s just more room for housing. We need housing more than we need businesses right now.” Critics such as Rep Len Turcotte (R-Barrington) say the phrase “as a matter of right” in the bill is of great concern. “Any time I see a bill that says ‘as a matter of right’, that compels top-down zoning, I’m against. It’s just something that I’m not willing to do.” These two thoughts illustrate the tension over housing: How much should towns get a say?

A number of bills would override certain local zoning codes in order to facilitate expansion of housing construction. Advocates say this is the only approach to address an entrenched problem. Others see them as a move to undermine local control.

List of the bills: House Bill 1053, House Bill 1400, House Bill 1361, House Bill 1281, House Bill 1291.

The Renaissance

Introducing the Tactus

Without time signatures and barlines, the earliest forms of music used a different type of pulse to that indicated by a modern conductor. The rhythmic focus in Renaissance music was called the tactus - a unit of time indicated by the raising and lowering of the hand (to help the musicians keep good ensemble) and the music began with a mensuration sign. This indicated how the tactus would be split, be it into two or three subdivisions. This tactus may have generally been close to the resting heart rate (a speed of which all humans have an awareness) perhaps 60 - 70 beats per minute.

In some of the larger cathedrals, the distance between each wing or the front to back were so great that the conductor and the musicians relied on a large pole that a person would move up and down to indicate the tempo or speed of the music.
