Paige's Corner: When My Name is Used in Vain...

Well this is not what I want to be writing about in the first week of Lent, though perhaps it is a sign of just how rampant sin is.... I know many folks associated from our church received a text from me Monday asking for help. Those who responded directly seemed to have gotten directions to get gift cards for me after which they would be asked to text back the card numbers - effectively allowing a stranger to steal money from them using my name. Sadly, this is a very common scam. Pastor information is commonly available on church web pages and Facebook pages and with sophisticated software, scammers are able to connect pastors to others related to the church in some way. (Only HCC related folks got these texts and not anyone in my personal life.)

It is heart breaking because reports tell us that people do get fooled by these scams. While sometimes the language used in these texts makes it obvious that something isn't quite right, the versions of this one really looked legitimate if you didn't know it wasn't coming from my phone number. It also wastes a lot of time and energy for church staff and for those who follow up to check it out.

Please let me know if you actually purchased gift cards so we can get you reimbursed and report it through law enforcement channels.

So We voted "yes!" Now what??

At our Annual Meeting this past Sunday we voted a unanimous “YES” to the Articles of Agreement to share a settled pastor with the Atkinson Congregational Church. Atkinson voted unanimously in favor at their Annual Meeting in January.

Here’s what happens now:

 Each church will appoint members to the "Covenant Team” to work on the details

related to what the compensation will be for the settled full-time shared pastor and how those expenses will be shared by the two

churches. Additionally, this Team will also settle on the final details around worship times, office hours, and other details of how the sharing will ‘work.’

 Each church will appoint four members to a joint Pastoral Search Committee. We will need to develop our Church Profile, and we will search together with Atkinson for a settled, full-time, shared pastor.

 After a few months, when both churches are ready, we will move to a

model of a shared full-time Interim Pastor, so we can begin to live into

this new reality, working out the kinks, while we prepare to actively

search for our settled pastor. The Rev. Paige Besse-Rankin, our interim

in Hampstead, is expected to fill this role. This transition will be

coordinated with the retirement of Jim Thomas.

Our Transition Team will continue to work on our Interim Goals to help us prepare fully for our new shared pastor.

MO will add to their work on the bylaws adjustments that will reflect this new relationship.

 When all the pieces are ready, we will begin an active search, as the

joint search committee receives pastor profiles, reviews them, and

interviews possible candidates. Once the committee has settled on a

candidate, the candidate will lead a joint worship service for both

churches, after which each congregation will separately vote on the

candidate. An affirmative vote by both churches would result in a call

to that pastor to serve both churches.

Please keep our churches in prayer through this transition!

Valentines for Disaster Victims: Hygiene Kits Project

In an effort to do what we can do for those recently affected by the California fires and hurricanes of 2024 we are putting together Hygiene Kits – a UCC/Church World Service mission.

For the month of February, we will have hearts on a tree in Hadley Hall with items needed for the Hygiene Kits. We are hoping to put together twenty kits and will assemble them in March at our next Loaf and Ladle (date TBD). If you would like to assist, please take a heart and supply the goods on the tag. Each tag requests 4 of the same item, also there is a $2 processing fee per kit so some hearts will ask for $8, check made payable to HCC, with a note Hygiene Kit in the memo section. We will have a collection box in the Sanctuary on Sundays and in the foyer of Hadley Hall during the week.

A Hygiene Kit includes:

Peace & Justice

There are only a couple things on my personal “bucket list:” seeing the northern lights and visiting the Redwoods in California. As a self-professed tree hugger, the thought of standing among the giant trees is awe inspiring. Only 5% of the original old growth forests still stand after decades of logging. There is more damage than the forest can heal alone. It needs help from humans to become viable again.

Much of the acreage was clear cut and then re-seeded with other tree species such as Douglas Fir. The newly seeded areas are much too dense, allowing very little sunlight to reach the forest floor. This impedes the growth of understory plants that serve as food and shelter to wildlife. Abandoned logging roads and culverts are clogging and fouling waterways in the forest as well.

Redwoods Rising is an organization that is working to restore habitat to the forests. They are practicing forest thinning and repairing and/or removing old roads and culverts to return the waterways to more of their original state. Much of the remaining old growth exists in pockets. This makes small unsustainable populations for the animals that call old growth home. Redwoods Rising is trying to create nature corridors between these islands of habitat, allowing for free movement of species.

Horatio G. Spafford’s Journey: “It Is Well With My Soul”

Horatio G. Spafford’s hymn, “It Is Well With My Soul,” stands as a testament to the unwavering faith and peace that can be found in the midst of profound loss and grief. Spafford, a successful lawyer and devout Christian, experienced unimaginable tragedy when his four daughters perished in a shipwreck. Devastated by this heartbreaking loss, he penned the lyrics to this hymn as a reflection of his unshakeable trust in God’s sovereign plan.

In the face of such immense sorrow, Spafford’s hymn offers a remarkable message of hope and resilience. The opening lines, “When peace like a river, attendeth my way, / When sorrows like sea billows roll,” vividly capture the tumultuous emotions he must have felt. Yet, within those very same verses, he declares, “It is well, it is well, with my soul.” These powerful words demonstrate Spafford’s profound belief that even in the midst of immense pain, his soul could find serenity and peace through God’s grace.

“It Is Well With My Soul” has resonated with countless individuals over the years, offering solace and strength in times of personal tragedy. The hymn’s enduring popularity can be attributed to the universal nature of loss and the universal need for hope. Its poignant affirmation of faith reminds us that even in our darkest moments, we can find comfort in the unwavering love of God.

Through the haunting beauty of its melody and the profound simplicity of its lyrics, “It Is Well With My Soul” serves as a gentle yet powerful reminder that no matter the trials we face, God’s peace can transcend all earthly understanding. This hymn continues to touch the hearts and souls of believers, inspiring them to persevere and find solace in the unwavering presence of the Divine.
