Insulation and Air-Sealing

Completed in Hadley Hall!

This week, Yankee Thermal Imaging, a Rochester-based firm, will complete work to improve the insulation and energy efficiency of Hadley Hall. Initiated by Chris McCune, this work will enhance the comfort of the space for our congregation and the 200+ community members who use the hall weekly. By addressing thermal losses and stopping air leakage, the project will significantly improve the efficiency of our mechanical and electrical systems.

The upgrades include extensive air-sealing and additional insulation, particularly in critical areas such as the roof, ceiling, and ductwork. The combination of blown cellulose insulation, spray polyurethane foam, and insulated foam board increases the R-value to R-60, meeting current building code standards. Improved air-sealing in the attic will help prevent cold air infiltration and heated air loss, minimizing air and heat flow through the walls and ceilings.

These improvements are expected to reduce our annual energy costs for oil and electricity, with an estimated payback period of 4.5 years, based on analysis by Yankee Thermal Imaging. Beyond cost savings, the upgrades enhance year-round comfort by keeping the building warmer in winter and cooler in summer, lowering utility bills, and reducing the potential for condensation that can damage building materials.

Since 2017, Chris and the Operations team have undertaken many other actions to reduce our energy costs:

• Installed programmable thermostats to turn on/turn off heating and AC

• Replaced 250 florescent bulbs throughout the church with LED replacement tubes, resulting in an approximate 28% reduction in overall electric costs

• Replaced failing 300-watt floodlights with 60-watt LEDs

• Repaired parking light floods with LED replacement bulbs

• Repaired two hot-water radiator fan units in social hall

• Connected electronic controls to air handler unit in social hall

• Added supplementary radiator piping for church administrator’s office

• Repaired faulty valve in heating distribution system in office space

• Installed timer unit for hot water circulation system to avoid circulating hot water through kitchen during off hours

• Installed small hot water heater, allowing boiler to be shut down during summer months

Thank you, Operations Team. We are blessed to have such good stewards of our building.

HCC Annual Meeting

Our 272nd Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2025 in Hadley Hall following worship. Please attend this vital gathering, as we look back at this past year’s accomplishments and look ahead to God’s call in our congregational life this year. A quorum of members is needed.

The annual report will be e-mailed/mailed to each member family once it is completed.

Please take some time to read the reports and familiarize yourself with the proposed budget for 2025.

Call for Nominations for HCC Officers

HCC Members:  One of the key agenda items at our upcoming Annual Meeting is the election of officers for 2025.

The officers include Collector; Treasurer; Auditor; Clerk; and Moderator.

Please prayerfully consider whether you have the time and skills to fill one of these important roles and indicate your interest to me ASAP. Our Bylaws require a 2-week posting period prior to Annual Meeting for the slate of officers.

It’s important that we have representation across our membership and not to continue to rely on the same leadership.

Thanks!

Rev Paige's Corner: Celebrating our Baptisms!

Our Worship Service for this coming Sunday has been planned by our confirmation class over the last two months. Putting together learnings from our discussions on Worship and on the Bible, the class has been discussing the scripture for this week - Luke's telling of the story about the Baptism of Jesus - and what it means for us.

As part of worship this week, we will offer a Reaffirmation of Baptism service - something offered in many churches on this Sunday when we think about Jesus's baptism. For me this is always a powerful reminder of an event that is - frankly - only in blurry memory as I was baptized as a young child. I didn't understand it when it happened - just the charge from my parents on the car trip to the church to stand quietly and to let the pastor put water on my head.

I often think of the great Protestant Reformer, Martin Luther. He struggled with his faith, depression, and anxiety for many years. There is a story of a time when he was hiding out in Whitenburg Castle and writing theology. His life was in danger in those days. It is said that he carved into his writing desk the words: "I am baptized!" and he could be heard walking the castle grounds and shouting to the sky the same words. For Martin Luther, his baptism brought a kind of confidence - a determination - a courage to live even in the faith of fear and struggle. That confidence came not because of who he was but because of who God is - the God who loved him and walked with him and accepted him and blessed him.

Our Confirmation Students talked about those words in the gospel telling of the story - when the voice of God was heard from the clouds declaring "This is my beloved child with whom I am well pleased." We talked about what that must hae meant for Jesus. But we also talked about what it means to us as we live our our lives as those who have been baptized. It is about God's grace revealed to us day by day.

In our understanding, Baptism is a once and for all sacrament, but it is also something that we reaffirm - not just year by year but I would even say day by day.

Blessings!

Peace & Justice

In the wake of the killing of United American Health CEO there was a huge volume of stories in the news and postings in social media about the way insurance companies provide service to policy holders. It became clear that many people have felt cheated by denials of claims. A pattern of denials for those who are the sickest or have lots of medical issues has emerged. People who are generally healthy don't have many complaints. In the midst of all of this came a story about AI being used to flag claims for coverage denial.

Another aspect of concern over health care is the trend of for-profit companies buying up non-profit and public hospitals like Catholic Medical Center. The purchase by Health Care America has been negotiated and approved by NH Attorney General. What is striking is that the agreement had to contain clear expectations that HCA would not close certain departments within specified numbers of years. This seems to be a preemptive move to avoid the issues that Exeter Hospital is causing for its patients and the surrounding communities.

Music Corner by Herb Tardiff

The “Twelve Days of Christmas” song has been the subject of many interpretations throughout the religious and secular communities. Even the often- quoted interpretation by a Catholic Priest was discredited by the priest himself.

The Twelve Days of Christmas is the celebration of Christmas day through January 5th. January 6th is called Epiphany, actually the 13th day after Christmas. Some say that January 5th is the twelfth night. In any event, the Catholic church has always celebrated Christmas on December 25th with celebrations each day thereafter.
