Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship Service

It was a beautiful Christmas Eve candlelight worship service this year.

Thank you to all of our readers, and to all who came to worship.

Rev Paige's Corner: Happy Day After Christmas!

It is the day after Christmas and I will confess I always feel a little bit of relief mixed with a little bit of both Christmas let down. The beauty of Christmas with all the lights in the darkness is very meaningful, but many of those lights will come down quickly along with the Christmas decorations. I always make a point on this day to listen to this song:

Matthew West - "Day After Christmas"

It reminds us that the "light of the world is still here". And I remember the wonderful poem by Howard Thurman that tells us:

"When the song of the angels is stilled,

when the star in the sky is gone,

When the sages and the shepherds have found their way home,

the work of hristmas is begun:

"To find the lost and lonely one,

to heal the braken soul with love,

to feed the hungry Children with warms and good food,

to feel the earth below, the sky above!

"To free the prisoner from all chains,

to make the powerful care,

to rebuild the nations with strength of good will,

to see all God's children everywhere!

To bring hope to every taske you do,

to dance at a baby's new birth,

To make music in an old person's heart,

and sing to the colors of the earth!

In the Church, today isn't the day after Christmas. It is the second day of Christmas! The celebration continues, but so does the work it inspires.

Blessings!

Presentation on Shared Ministry

Peace & Justice

I read a great story from Men's Fitness earlier this week about middle schoolers learning about the techniques used to discover new medicines through hands-on lessons. The STEM program was hosted through a Boys and Girls Club in Chicago and mentored by research labs in the area. The opening assignment was to go out and collect a sample of something with bacteria.

13-year-old Camarria Williams, whose mother regularly fed geese in her neighborhood, decided to collect goose poop for her sample. The students returned with their individual samples and began to analyze them following procedures developed by research labs. The goal was to give the students the experience of finding molecules that could be developed into antibiotics and other disease fighting compounds. This kind of partnership between scientists and educational institutions to develop interest among young people of various backgrounds in science careers.

To everyone's surprise, Camarria's sample contained a molecule that was similar to a known cancer-fighting molecule! The sample was sent to the sponsoring research lab for further analysis and was found to be an ovarian cancer and melanoma fighting structure.
