HoCo Helps People in Need Gain Access to Medical Equipment?

The Loan Closet of Howard County is a clearinghouse of donated medical equipment for temporary use to all Howard County residents. Many residents in need of medical equipment may not be able to afford these items, or they may only need equipment for a short period of time. Others have medical equipment they no longer need. The Loan Closet brings these two communities of people together.

A Message From HoCo Bureau of Environmental Services
Storm Clean-Up Options

A message from Howard County Bureau of Environmental Services:

Due to severe weather on June 21, residents may have extra yard trim and food spoilage. Please see below for options.
  • Residents with weekly curbside yard trim collection are reminded that brush and branches must be less than 4 inches in diameter and less than 4 feet in length. Bundles must weigh less than 40 pounds. Yard trim in plastic bags will not be collected. Please be patient as collection crews work to safely complete their routes.
  • Residents without curbside yard trim collection are encouraged to haul material to the woodwaste area at Alpha Ridge Landfill (2350 Marriottsville Rd., Marriottsville). Alpha Ridge Landfill is open Mon - Sat 8am-4pm. There is no charge to Howard County residents for this material. Material set out for curbside collection will be collected as trash and each item (4 item limit per household) must weigh less than 40 pounds.
  • Commercial haulers will be charged the current rate of $25/ton for brush.
  • Those who lost power and had food spoilage should dispose of items as trash or take it to the Alpha Ridge Landfill for composting.  Landfill staff will direct to the proper area.  No meats, dairy or fish accepted for compost.
  • Two temporary sites are available for woodwaste:
    • Burleigh Manor Middle School, 4200 Centennial Lane, Ellicott City, MD
    • The Howard County Living Farm Museum, 12985 Frederick Road, West Friendship, MD (across from the Howard County Fair Grounds).
The hours for both sites are today (June 23) 12pm to 4pm, and on June 24 and 25, 8am to 4pm.  Please follow directions at site. Sites are limited to woodwaste material only (brush and branches), no trash will be accepted. Only Howard County residents hauling woodwaste will be accepted.

Harper's Glen Stream Project

A plan to restore the Harper's Glen Stream was initiated as part of the Harper's Glen Townhouse Association Healthy Stream Project, a community-based project whose goal is to conserve and restore approximately 950 feet of stream located on CA Open Space parcel 14, behind the Harper's Glen townhouses.  This stream restoration project is an extension of the work completed by Columbia Association on the downstream or Northeast side of Harper's Farm Road in 2010 and 2011.

The stream is eroding through most of the reach and depositing sediment above the culvert under Harper's Farm Road and further downstream in Wilde Lake. The Harper's Glen Townhouse Association received a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust for the design and has worked diligently to obtain the federal and state permits for this project. CA has dedicated money and contracted with Environmental Quality Resources to build the project. Construction will begin in late June or early July. The pathway that runs Southwest from Harper's Farm Road behind Harper's Glen and towards the Swansfield Pool and Neighborhood Center will be closed during construction. The construction should take about two months. We thank you for your patience during the project to restore this stream in Harper's Choice.

Summer Architectural Meeting Schedule

Just a friendly reminder that Applications for Exterior Alterations are due two weeks before the next scheduled meeting. This allows time for the Covenant Advisor and committee members to prepare for the meeting so they can gather adequate information as needed. The committee typically meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from September through July and once in August and December. Please review the meeting schedule and application deadlines as you plan for upcoming exterior alterations and improvements to your property.
