HCCI WEEKLY!
A weekly digest of upcoming events, opportunities, and recent events.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Malcolm A. Punter, EdD, MBA

Tomorrow, we will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His is a legacy of activism, faith, leadership and change. Dr. King represented the best and the brightest that America has to offer. As we stand face-to-face with a crisis in leadership in America, punctuated domestic white terrorism, we can look to his example for hope and inspiration.

A 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr. King participated in and led marches for Blacks Americans' right to votedesegregationlabor rights, and other basic civil rights. King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and later became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). King helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In 1965, he helped organize two of the three Selma to Montgomery marches. In his final years, he began to actively oppose poverty, predatory capitalism, and the Vietnam War.

It is the work of this great man, and many men and women like him, that laid the foundation for HCCI. We work every day to uphold his legacy, to establish Beloved Communities that are guided by love, respect and inclusion where all people can be civically engaged, empowered and thrive. According to Dr. King:

"In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood.” -- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin's Song
Written by Michael Barker (pictured)
Moments shared... some mournful tears
as every child will "shine"
rivers bend... but roads don't end
love so sweet... sublime
and yes... life's gone
but not the dream
no pain shall last forever
death is but a chance to live
a task we each endeavor

For evening skies
and children's sighs
and dawns that always set
remind us all
that leaves must fall
we remember and won't forget
