New bill would criminalize providing emergency care to children
A new bill, HB 241, has been passed in Florida that has the unintended effect of making it a first-degree misdemeanor for a physician to provide emergency or urgent medical care to a child at a sporting event or the scene of an accident without the consent of the child’s parents. If signed into law, this will have a devastating impact on Florida physicians’ ability to deliver necessary, immediate emergent care to children.

That is why the FMA is asking physicians to contact Gov. Ron DeSantis immediately and urge him to veto this legislation. On May 14, the FMA, along with the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association and several medical specialty societies, sent a letter to Gov. DeSantis calling for the veto. But nothing will have more impact than personalized letters or emails from Florida physicians. Helping the effort to get this legislation vetoed is easy. You can email the Governor at [email protected] or send a letter to:

The Honorable Ron DeSantis
Governor, State of Florida

Physicians who serve Florida Medicaid patients must enroll before Oct. 1
Physicians who provide services for Florida Medicaid patients are required to enroll as participating providers with Florida Medicaid in accordance with federal requirements. This includes those who refer Florida Medicaid patients for other services, order services such as laboratory and imaging, serve as the attending physician in an institutional setting, and prescribe prescription drugs. Effective Oct. 1, 2021, any fee-for-service claim submitted to Florida Medicaid that identifies a physician who is not enrolled with Florida Medicaid will deny, and the billing provider will not receive reimbursement. This includes claims that identify a physician who only referred or ordered other services, and pharmacy claims. Additionally, Florida Medicaid patients will not be able to fill or refill prescriptions prescribed by physicians who are not enrolled. If you are a physician who provides any of these services, it is urgent that you enroll with Florida Medicaid before Oct. 1. Complete the online application process here. For more information about the Referring, Ordering, Prescribing, and Attending (ROPA) provider enrollment initiative, visit Florida Medicaid’s ROPA Provider Enrollment page.
New requirement for Medicaid home health claims effective June 21
As required by the federal 21st Century Cures Act, Medicaid home health claims must be submitted through the health plan’s electronic visit verification (EVV) vendor. Effective for dates of service beginning June 21, 2021, the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care (SMMC) health plans will deny all claims for personal care services and home health services submitted outside of their EVV vendors. Read more in this update from AHCA, Florida’s Medicaid program administrator.
Doctors tell how to make the most of telehealth visits
As things head toward a new normal, lawmakers and insurers, including Medicare, are debating how to proceed, the biggest question being whether to continue reimbursing providers at the same payment rate as for in-person coverage once the covid public health emergency ends. Read more.
