HCSO Newsletter #54 | HCSO is Ready to Rodeo!
Message from Sheriff Ed Gonzalez:

In honor of 71 years of tradition, our Mounted Patrol Unit traveled on a pony express-style ride from Harris County to the Texas State Capitol. Our riders hand-delivered invitations to state officials to the 88th Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Thank you to our Mounted Patrol Unit for keeping this tradition alive. Check out the video below of our Mounted Patrol making their way to Austin.

To keep the Rodeo spirit going, do not forget to wear your western attire this month! And if you’re visiting NRG park, be sure to say “Howdy” to the many HCSO deputies keeping the rodeo grounds safe for everyone.

Today, we welcome and congratulate new teammates into our Harris County Sheriff’s Office family. The 21 new sworn-in detention officers have worked hard and completed the Basic County Corrections Course (BCCC) at our academy. The new teammates are eager to serve their community.

And serving our community often means going above and beyond the usual call of duty. Deputy Sandra Andrews and Deputy Daisy Alvarez received a call for service in northwest Harris County where a woman found a turtle in her backyard that had a hook in its mouth.

Deputy Andrews and Deputy Alvarez rushed Captain Hook — the turtle — to the Cy-Fair Animal Hospital, where they were able to remove the hook and save his life. Thanks to Deputy Andrews and Deputy Alvarez for such an extraordinary job! You can watch their heroic efforts, which were featured on Animal Planet's "The Vet Life", by clicking the link in the news section below.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office is among five national finalists for Best Nextdoor Presence in the 2020 Government Social Media Golden Post Awards. We are the only Texas law enforcement agency to be among the finalists.

The award is for the government agency that embodies what it means to be a good neighbor by using Nextdoor to show heart, emphasize community and make an impact. The winner will be announced next month at the Government Social Media Conference in Seattle.

Keeping our community informed is one of our top priorities, and that is one of the reasons our patrol captains joined Twitter. Please follow your district captain’s on Twitter, and do not miss a beat of the latest law enforcement news in your community.

As always, I am eternally grateful for the phenomenal work everyone does in all units and factions of our agency. All of you are dedicated to serving the residents of Harris County, and I could not be more proud of everyone for that.

God bless all of you, and God bless the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
