Bauer Closing "Own The Moment"
in Suburban Boston

The Bauer "Own The Moment" retail experience in the Boston suburb of Burlington, Mass., will be closing after little more than two years. In a Nov. 30, 2017 report in the Daily Times ChronicleTotal Wine Spirits Beer & More will be occupying the Bauer space at the Crossroads Retail Center. It is still not clear when the "Own The Moment" store will close.

Roustan Media Buys
The Hockey News

Former Bauer Chairman Graeme Roustan, the Chairman, Owner and Publisher of Roustan Media, bought The Hockey News. Roustan took over ownership of the 71-year-old magazine on Jan. 27. Roustan also owns hockey stick brands Christian and Torspo and is a Governor for the Canadian Women's Hockey League.

Legendary Goalie Johnny Bower
Dies at 93

Johnny Bower did not have an easy road to winning four Stanley Cups as a goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs or making the Hockey Hall of Fame. Bower, who died the day after Christmas at 93, needed to be very creative to come up with the equipment he needed as a kid in rural Saskatchewan.

USA Hockey's Jim Johannson Dies at 53

Jim Johannson, the USA Hockey assistant executive director and the general manager of the 2018 U.S. Olympic men's ice hockey team, died at 53 on Jan. 21. Johannson began his career with USA Hockey in 2000 and played at the University of Wisconsin, in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics and in the International Hockey League from 1987-94.

There has been a lot of speculation that Seattle will be the next city to get an NHL expansion franchise. Can the place where the Seattle Metropolitans won the 1917 Stanley Cup become a hockey town? And can the NHL fill the city's winter sports void created when the NBA's SuperSonics left in 2008 for Oklahoma City?

Army Challenges Use of Las Vegas'
Golden Knights Nickname

The U.S. Army filed a challenge with the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board on Jan. 10 regarding the use of the Golden Knights nickname by the NHL expansion Las Vegas franchise. Army said it has used the Golden Knights name for its parachute team since 1969. Las Vegas owner Bill Foley is a 1967 Army graduate.

Dropping Women's Hockey Leaves Void
at University of North Dakota

Girls participation in hockey in North Dakota's three largest cities has grown by 30 percent since 2012-13, according to USA Hockey. But there is concern the demise of the University of North Dakota women's program, which produced Olympic silver medalists Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Monique Lamoureux-Morando, could have an adverse effect in the future.

Rise of Co-Op Teams Not a Sign
of More Players in New Hampshire

New Hampshire high school hockey has seen a large increase in co-op teams - including some of the state's largest high schools. Coaches believe losing more players to full-season junior hockey as well as financial issues for inner city players is having an impact.

Two Minutes for "Bearding?"

San Jose's Joe Thornton and Toronto's Nazem Kadri mixed it up before the puck dropped on their early January game. During the scrum that resulted, Kadri tried to grab Thornton's jersey and instead got a big chunk of his beard.

The collaboration for the purchase of hockey equipment by U.S. hockey dealers between the HDA and National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA) and SDC (Sports Distributors of Canada) continues to grow as it enters its third year.
