HANNY NEWTON - April 11/12/13

METAL THREADS: Light/Colour/Shade

£255

A Contemporary approach to ‘OR Nue' goldwork embroidery.

On this creative course, we will delve into the many possibilities of taking inspiration from the historical technique of ‘Or Nue, where metal threads are shaded with various colours of soft threads to create contrasting patterns and images.

Goldwork threads hold so much potential to explore colour, shade and contrast in embroidery, exploring the beautiful contrast that metal and shade can give us. With a balance of technique and experimentation, there is plenty of ‘breathing space’ left for you to discover your own response to the historical techniques of goldwork.

Throughout the course, you will build up your own unique series of hand embroidery samples and explorations, which will become a toolkit of techniques and explorations to further your creativity and enhance your practice as you work towards developing your own unique embroidery pieces.

Adventures in drawing and making for textiles

MATTHEW DELIVERED THIS COURSE AS A NEW COURSE IN 2025 AND I FEEL THAT IT WAS SO BRILLIANT THAT IT WOULD BE WELL WORTH REPEATING IN 2026. EVEN STUDENTS THAT HAVE DONE THIS COURSE WILL FIND SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING A SECOND TIME ROUND.

‘Play continues to be a big factor in my studio, because that’s how one allows oneself to move in directions which one could not have foreseen’    Richard Serra

This workshop will explore adventurous and playful ways in which to gather and manipulate visual imagery, both two and three dimensionally, in order to develop ideas for textiles. Through the processes of, drawing, painting, stencilling, collage etc, you will create a collection of visual information that exploits colour, line, shape and pattern. This gathered material will then be subject to a series of dynamic activities which take as there starting point the ‘verb list’ of the artist Richard Serra. By subjecting both drawn image and textile materials to these series of actions, we will endeavour to explore the potential of both image and materials to do unexpected and surprising things.

MARY SLEIGH - May 15/16

ACTIVATING THE SURFACE

£160

The idea that when making work 'there is no straight line from beginning to end but rather a combination of fragments that relate to one another’ is the basis of this workshop.

We shall use mixed media including gesso, inks, paints, with paper, fabric, stitch and ephemera.

Through experimentation, discussion and sharing individual ideas, allowing change through the process of creating, we shall find inventive and expressive ways of combining a range of materials allowing unexpected connections to emerge.

MOOR ART 2

My drawing and painting group that meets on alternate Wednesdays is currently full with a small waiting list, but I do have spaces on Moor Art 2 that meets on a weekend and follows the same work as Moor Art 1.

It is an opportunity to really spend quality time with like minded people exploring new techniques and processes using all kinds of inspiratonal jumping off points and delving into the lives of master artists. This term we will be exploring PATTERN in its widest context: looking at cultural, historical and contemporary uses of pattern.

FINALLY

'TEXTILE EXPLORATIONS'

We meeting one Wednesday each month with ample opportunity to progress work between sessions.

Each session provides new and practical tasks that students can choose to take on board or not. What is important that each member of the group goes on his or her own personal journey documenting progress on route and not knowing the destination. Keeping a sketchbook of trials and samples is key to being in this course showing this development of ideas.

In the last session we played with Plaster of Paris to manipulate the fabric......we had lost of fun doing this!
