Hello Everyone

It has been a long time since I last sent out a newsletter. No points for guessing why that was, but enough to say I am back with you again and I am now looking forward to the coming Spring and some creativity in my home.

WIth the latter in mind I want to alert you to up and coming courses at Moor Hall that still have spaces on them. Please read on.

HANNY NEWTON - April 11/12/13

METAL THREADS: Light/Colour/Shade

£255

A Contemporary approach to ‘OR Nue' goldwork embroidery.

On this creative course, we will delve into the many possibilities of taking inspiration from the historical technique of ‘Or Nue, where metal threads are shaded with various colours of soft threads to create contrasting patterns and images.

Goldwork threads hold so much potential to explore colour, shade and contrast in embroidery, exploring the beautiful contrast that metal and shade can give us. With a balance of technique and experimentation, there is plenty of ‘breathing space’ left for you to discover your own response to the historical techniques of goldwork.

Throughout the course, you will build up your own unique series of hand embroidery samples and explorations, which will become a toolkit of techniques and explorations to further your creativity and enhance your practice as you work towards developing your own unique embroidery pieces.

MATTHEW HARRIS - April 24/25/26

Adventures in drawing and making for textiles

MATTHEW DELIVERED THIS COURSE AS A NEW COURSE IN 2025 AND I FEEL THAT IT WAS SO BRILLIANT THAT IT WOULD BE WELL WORTH REPEATING IN 2026. EVEN STUDENTS THAT HAVE DONE THIS COURSE WILL FIND SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING A SECOND TIME ROUND.

‘Play continues to be a big factor in my studio, because that’s how one allows oneself to move in directions which one could not have foreseen’    Richard Serra

This workshop will explore adventurous and playful ways in which to gather and manipulate visual imagery, both two and three dimensionally, in order to develop ideas for textiles. Through the processes of, drawing, painting, stencilling, collage etc, you will create a collection of visual information that exploits colour, line, shape and pattern. This gathered material will then be subject to a series of dynamic activities which take as there starting point the ‘verb list’ of the artist Richard Serra. By subjecting both drawn image and textile materials to these series of actions, we will endeavour to explore the potential of both image and materials to do unexpected and surprising things.

ALICE FOX - May 1/2/3

WEAVING THE LAND

£255

An exploration of the land around the studio, creating records of our experience of place using simple weave and manipulation techniques with natural fibres, found objects, and gathered materials. There are many ways we can record what we see around us and how we experience the natural world. Alice’s workshops invite the participant to notice the detail that surrounds us and explore the potential of what we find. Gathered objects and materials will be used alongside naturally dyed threads, creating seasonal and site-specific samples and structures. Fibre and foraged materials will be used to work with objects and cloth in an experimental way, forming individual records of the place we have explored together.

The course will include: an introduction to some basic weave techniques; a variety of ways to work with found objects and gathered materials; cordage making; techniques for creating 3D structures using threads and found materials.

MARY SLEIGH - May 15/16

ACTIVATING THE SURFACE

£160

The idea that when making work 'there is no straight line from beginning to end but rather a combination of fragments that relate to one another’ is the basis of this workshop.

We shall use mixed media including gesso, inks, paints, with paper, fabric, stitch and ephemera.

Through experimentation, discussion and sharing individual ideas, allowing change through the process of creating, we shall find inventive and expressive ways of combining a range of materials allowing unexpected connections to emerge.

FURTHER COURSES AT

MOOR HALL TAUGHT BY BOBBY

MOOR ART 2

My drawing and painting group that meets on alternate Wednesdays is currently full with a small waiting list, but I do have spaces on Moor Art 2 that meets 9 or 10 weekends in the year following the same work as Moor Art 1.

It is an opportunity to really spend quality time with like minded people exploring new techniques and processes using all kinds of inspiratonal jumping off points and delving into the lives of master artists. Next term we will work through careful observational drawings and develop these drawings into to cubist style works using my own techiniques. We will link this to explorations into the work of Picasso and Braque.

FINALLY

'TEXTILE EXPLORATIONS'

We meeting one Wednesday each month with ample opportunity to progress work between sessions.

Each session provides new and practical tasks that students can choose to take on board or not. What is important that each member of the group goes on his or her own personal journey documenting progress on route and not knowing the destination. Keeping a sketchbook of trials and samples is key to being in this course showing this development of ideas.

In the last session we played with Plaster of Paris to manipulate the fabric......we had lost of fun doing this!
