Creating Homes Where People Can Thrive

Dear Supporter:

Hundreds of our fellow community members have transitioned out of homelessness into stable housing this year.

But then what? An empty house is just a shell.

A referral to House N2 Home (HN2H) means that rental housing can become a real home. This has been achieved with a committed volunteer workforce, and a small but very important group of paid “heavy lifters.” This year alone, our volunteers have logged 22,500 hours.

What do these numbers mean? So far in 2023, we have moved 632 people off the floor, out of their cars, or from their tents into inviting, comfortable and fully furnished homes. That includes more than 300 children.

With every bed we make, we aspire to honor the dignity of the person who will spend the night beneath those covers.

Our approach also keeps thousands of items–couches, chairs, beds, artwork, dishes, microwaves, and more–out of the landfill. We rely on these perfectly useful donations from the community to turn houses into personalized homes.

HN2H has become the go-to in Washtenaw County for helping vulnerable people create real homes. More than 30 community agencies, including Safe House, Shelter Association of Washtenaw County, and Avalon Housing rely on HN2H for services. (The community need is crushing. SOS Community Services reports that 150 families are currently on the waiting list for shelter space.)

From 31 client moves in 2019 to 315–and counting–this year, that’s a lot of HN2H heart and soul. It‘s also a lot of gas at the pump, insurance and maintenance for four moving vans, hundreds of hours of paid labor to help lift and move furniture, and several thousand dollars for essentials such as encasements for every mattress that leaves our facility.

Before year’s end, less than five years after our first move,

we will complete our 1,000th move.

Thanks to Trinity Health (without whose partnership we could not function), we have expanded our footprint. We now occupy 33,000 square feet, a 50% increase in working space from 2022. We are so grateful for the ability to help, but to continue at this pace we need to dramatically increase our volunteer base and funding partners. We need you. Last year, we sought $100,000. This year, with your support, we hope to double that figure.

Every day at HN2H, we are honored to help people moving out of homelessness in a tangible, respectful way. We are grateful to the clients who share their stories and to the caseworkers who work tirelessly to help folks get on their feet. One thankful case worker wrote:

I was able to stop by to see my client yesterday and my heart was exploding. Her place is BEAUTIFUL and she is absolutely over the moon with all that HN2H has done for her.

I am so grateful for all that HN2H is and all that you work so hard for. Thank you for everything that you do every day, for the so many people in our community that deserve to have their humanity and dignity honored after having been without that experience for so long. You are ALL doing work that there are no words for in the English language. It is beyond human services, beyond social work, beyond compassion, and empathy, beyond love.
