Online and In-Store Grocery Shopping Behaviors Among Low-income Households

The SNAP Online Purchasing Pilot allows SNAP participants to use their benefits to purchase groceries online. A recently published study examined online food purchasing behaviors of SNAP-eligible households in Maryland.

Most SNAP-eligible shoppers in the study reported ordering groceries online at least once, but bought fewer healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, online than in physical stores. Families discussed mistrust of online hired shoppers as one of the reasons to avoid ordering fruits, vegetables, meat, and seafood items online.

Check out our Q&A with lead author Dr. Angela Trude as well as the infographic her team developed with key findings from the study.
