On behalf of the Executive Council and HFES staff, we wish you and your loved ones a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year.

Please accept my personal thanks for choosing HFES as your professional home and financially supporting the Society through your membership renewal. Students, practitioners, researchers, academics, consultants, and retired professionals in the U.S. and around the world – we appreciate all of our members and the different perspectives and knowledge that we share with each other through our events, publications, and local and student chapters. I look forward to seeing you at an HFES event in 2023 (International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care in Orlando; Annual Meeting and ErgoX in Washington, DC).

I want to extend an additional thank you to each of our 400+ members who volunteer with HFES by serving on a committee or task force, leading a technical or affinity group or student or local chapter, organizing a webinar, reviewing manuscripts for our journals, doing outreach on behalf of HFES and the profession, mentoring other members, working on standards, and more. Your engagement is vital to the future of our Society and the profession. We are always looking for new volunteers; please contact me if volunteering for HFES is one of your New Year’s resolutions!

Our members are the driving force behind HFES and we are committed to increasing the value of your membership. Please share your ideas for ways we can serve you better in the new year.

Happy holidays and all the best to you and yours,

Answering the "So What Question" Webinar Series: How Can Human Factors Help With Implementing Automation in the Oil and Gas Industry

January 6, 2023 | 9:00 a.m. CT
Complimentary Registration for Members and Non-members

In this webinar, Dr. Mica Endsley will introduce the “human-autonomy systems oversight model” developed based on several decades of applied research that includes out-of-the-loop performance problems, monitoring, and trust, among many others.

The webinar will also provide an overview of the key solutions to reduce the risk of human performance issues when interacting with autonomous systems such as human-automation interface features, central automation interaction paradigms comprising levels of automation, adaptive automation, and granularity of control approaches.

Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems

The global investment in renewable and sustainable energy systems is critical for addressing the climate crisis. The investment is scaling up new energy sources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, etc.; building out smart grids to transmit energy flows that fluctuate throughout the day and incorporate large-scale energy storage systems; developing green manufacturing of steel and cement; transitioning to clean automobiles, busses, trucks, trains, and planes that use electricity or green hydrogen; expanding networked vehicle charging systems; incorporating smart building heating and air-conditioning systems and electrical appliances; etc. However, the rapid changes of these complex systems can be accompanied by failures that slow adoption. HF/E plays a critical role in the design for usability and reliability of such complex systems.

The proposed special issue invites contributions that address HF/E in the design and adoption of renewable and sustainable energy systems and devices. Papers can approach the topic by proposing theoretical frameworks, conducting modeling or laboratory experiments, or presenting findings from field studies on renewable and sustainable energy topics.

Assessment and Effectiveness of Driver Monitoring Systems

Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) aim to assess in real-time the state of the driver, including their physiological and attentional state. They are designed to detect the onset of detrimental conditions like distraction and drowsiness, and alert the driver if their attention or vigilance levels fall below set safety thresholds. The introduction of effective and accurate DMS is expected to drastically reduce the number of collisions caused by human error, with at least 140,000 fewer serious injuries expected in the European Union alone by 2038. Despite their potential, however, little is known about the effectiveness of DMS. Data on the accuracy of existing systems is sparse. Furthermore, while current DMS leverage vehicle dynamics and drivers’ behavioral patterns to determine levels of distraction and drowsiness, novel approaches that leverage the recording of physiological or neural signals are promised to increase the accuracy and effectiveness of driver state detection. The issues of drivers’ acceptance of and trust in these systems are also key, with recent investigations questioning their perceived accuracy across diverse traffic scenarios.

The proposed special section invites theoretical, methodological, and empirical efforts that explore the assessment and effectiveness of current and novel strategies for driver state detection.
HFES Joins National Patient Safety Board Coalition

HFES has joined a coalition of 75 (and growing) organizations that are advancing the call to expeditiously form a new independent federal agency, the National Patient Safety Board (NPSB), to model aspects of the National Transportation Safety Board and the Commercial Aviation Safety Team within health care. The NPSB would improve and promote public health and welfare by monitoring and anticipating adverse events, creating recommendations and solutions to prevent medical error, and bringing lessons into practice. The NSPB would model the efforts of the NTSB and CAST within health care and would complement existing agencies in monitoring and anticipating patient safety events with artificial intelligence, provide expertise to study the causes of errors, create recommendations and solutions to prevent future harms, and leverage existing systems to bring key learnings into practice. The NPSB would guarantee a data-driven, scalable approach to preventing and reducing patient safety events in healthcare settings—and will save lives.

On Wednesday, December 8, U.S. Representative Nanette Barragán (D-CA) announced the introduction of H.R.9377 – the National Patient Safety Board Act, legislation.

HFES will keep its members informed regarding coalition activities and the progress of the proposed legislation.

2022 Midterm Elections - What's Happening in Washington

Lewis-Burke Associates – December 9, 2022

On November 8, 2022, the U.S. held midterm elections for the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Despite historical trends and political projections of a “red wave,” Democrats retained control of the Senate and Republicans won only a narrow majority in the House. This will usher in at least two years of divided government, but significantly constrain overly partisan legislation or attempts by Republicans to roll back major legislation passed over the last two years. A divided government may also cause gridlock and prevent President Biden from advancing more ambitious legislation.
You Can Help FPE Promote Professional Practice Worldwide

The Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) has had a very productive year, thanks to its many donors, volunteers, and supporters. We recognized the distinguished career of Ukrainian ergonomist Dr. Gregory Bedny as Ergonomics Practitioner of the Year and awarded Ms. Siobhan Merriman from University of Southampton, UK the Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award for her applied research on drivers’ trust of vehicle automation. In collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the American Industrial Hygiene Association, useful tools for ergonomics practice were compiled as a free web resource and translated into Spanish and Arabic for broad accessibility to practitioners. Two grants were awarded to researchers in Thailand and Malaysia to address ergonomics issues that promise to have major impacts. FPE delivered several short courses and webinars with the purpose of sharpening practitioners’ skills and preparing them for professional certification. We have also provided mentoring to early career professionals as well as support for certified professionals who are experiencing financial hardship. Details on these and other projects that promote professional practice in human factors and ergonomics can be found at Ergofoundation.org.

To help us continue such valuable services for our professional community worldwide, we need your support. FPE depends solely on the continuing support, both in time as a volunteer and funding as a supporter, to promote excellence in the professional practice of HFE.
HFES wants to promote the important achievements of our members in the bi-weekly Bulletin. Appropriate topics include research milestones or other significant achievements, professional accolades, awards or recognitions, promotions or new positions, and similar professionally-oriented topics. If you would like to share news with the HFES community, please fill out this form.

Additionally, if you are made aware of the passing of any members of HFES, please let us know. Contact HFES Executive Director Steven Kemp at skemp@hfes.org.
