Call for Papers: Special Issue of Human Factors (IF = 3.598)
Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems
The global investment in renewable and sustainable energy systems is critical for addressing the climate crisis. The investment is scaling up new energy sources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, etc.; building out smart grids to transmit energy flows that fluctuate throughout the day and incorporate large-scale energy storage systems; developing green manufacturing of steel and cement; transitioning to clean automobiles, busses, trucks, trains, and planes that use electricity or green hydrogen; expanding networked vehicle charging systems; incorporating smart building heating and air-conditioning systems and electrical appliances; etc. However, the rapid changes of these complex systems can be accompanied by failures that slow adoption. HF/E plays a critical role in the design for usability and reliability of such complex systems.
The proposed special issue invites contributions that address HF/E in the design and adoption of renewable and sustainable energy systems and devices. Papers can approach the topic by proposing theoretical frameworks, conducting modeling or laboratory experiments, or presenting findings from field studies on renewable and sustainable energy topics.

Call for Papers: Special Section of Human Factors Journal
Assessment and Effectiveness of Driver Monitoring Systems
Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) aim to assess in real-time the state of the driver, including their physiological and attentional state. They are designed to detect the onset of detrimental conditions like distraction and drowsiness, and alert the driver if their attention or vigilance levels fall below set safety thresholds. The introduction of effective and accurate DMS is expected to drastically reduce the number of collisions caused by human error, with at least 140,000 fewer serious injuries expected in the European Union alone by 2038. Despite their potential, however, little is known about the effectiveness of DMS. Data on the accuracy of existing systems is sparse. Furthermore, while current DMS leverage vehicle dynamics and drivers’ behavioral patterns to determine levels of distraction and drowsiness, novel approaches that leverage the recording of physiological or neural signals are promised to increase the accuracy and effectiveness of driver state detection. The issues of drivers’ acceptance of and trust in these systems are also key, with recent investigations questioning their perceived accuracy across diverse traffic scenarios.
The proposed special section invites theoretical, methodological, and empirical efforts that explore the assessment and effectiveness of current and novel strategies for driver state detection.
The submission deadline has been extended to February 10, 2023.

HFES Product Design Technical Group Webinar
You Have Enabled Design to Get a Seat at the Table - Now What?
Strategies for Getting and Keeping that Seat
February 8th, 12:00 pm ET
In his talk, TS Balaji will take a deep dive into what to do and what not to do in order to establish and maintain UX/CX as a function that is considered in corporate decisions that drive strategy and ultimately experience for their customers and users. A key to success is looking outward while considering why a superior user experience is important and how it contributes to the mission of the company. The answers, in turn, must be constructed in the language understood by principal decision-makers, and in many instances, you may use design to help achieve the objectives of the principal decision-makers. Making your presence at the decision table to be persistent requires continuous research, experimentation, and commitment to discovering changing experiences needed by users and customers.

Joyce Cameron
Joyce Cameron, DMA, MA, died on 15 Dec. 2022 in Kettering, Ohio. Joyce had a 25+ year career teaching music-related subjects at Centenary College of Louisiana and Wright State University before deciding to pursue a career in Human Factors. She earned a Master’s in Human Factors and Experimental Psychology from the University of Dayton. Her pedagogical training and emphasis on systems were reflected in her thesis on reducing office workstation injuries.
During her career in Human Factors, she worked for the University of Dayton Research Institute and Booz Allen Hamilton supporting the Human Systems Information Analysis Center (HSIAC). She located information, analyzed, and synthesized information, and conducted studies when the relevant information was not otherwise available for clients in the Department of Defense, Army, Navy, Air Force, FAA, NASA, industry, and academia. She and Bill Moroney collaborated on multiple questionnaire design tutorials since 1994. In 2018, they coauthored the book: Questionnaire Design: How to Ask the Right Questions of the Right People at the Right Time to Get the Information You Need (Users' Guides to Human Factors and Ergonomics Methods).

You Can Help FPE Promote Professional Practice Worldwide
The Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) has had a very productive year, thanks to its many donors, volunteers, and supporters. We recognized the distinguished career of Ukrainian ergonomist Dr. Gregory Bedny as Ergonomics Practitioner of the Year and awarded Ms. Siobhan Merriman from the University of Southampton, UK the Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award for her applied research on drivers’ trust of vehicle automation. In collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the American Industrial Hygiene Association, useful tools for ergonomics practice were compiled as a free web resource and translated into Spanish and Arabic for broad accessibility to practitioners. Two grants were awarded to researchers in Thailand and Malaysia to address ergonomics issues that promise to have major impacts. FPE delivered several short courses and webinars with the purpose of sharpening practitioners’ skills and preparing them for professional certification. We have also provided mentoring to early career professionals as well as support for certified professionals who are experiencing financial hardship. Details on these and other projects that promote professional practice in human factors and ergonomics can be found at Ergofoundation.org.
To help us continue such valuable services for our professional community worldwide, we need your support. FPE depends solely on the continuing support, both in time as a volunteer and funding as a supporter, to promote excellence in the professional practice of HFE.
