Fill Your Symposium Agenda with In-Depth Workshops
Begin your HFES Health Care Symposium experience with in-depth instruction and expanded discussions on pressing issues impacting health care human factors on April 12, 2021. These intimate pre-symposium workshops are where you can enhance your knowledge, have deeper conversations, and get your questions answered.
 
Add a workshop to your HCS registration and bring back more insights you can share with your organization following the symposium this April.
Submit Applications for 2021 HFES Fellows by February 26
 
The Fellows Selection Committee invites applications for the HFES Fellow designation. Election to Fellow status is an honor conferred by distinguished colleagues to recognize outstanding achievement, consistently superior professional performance, exceptional contributions, personal service to the Society, and other meritorious accomplishments by Society members. Any Full Member in good standing may apply. Individuals may apply for Fellow status on their own behalf or submit an application on behalf of another.
 
Applications are due Friday, February 26, 2021.
Comments Sought on Draft Standard
HFES members and the general public are invited to comment on the draft HFES 400 Standard - Human Readiness Level Scale in the System Development Process.

This standard specifies how to apply the Human Readiness Level (HRL) scale in the system development process. Comments may be submitted via either the online submission form or by completing the Word document and emailing it to HFES400@hfes.org
Call for Proposals – HFES 65th International Annual Meeting

Present your work at the 65th International Annual Meeting, October 4 - 8, 2021. Each year, the Annual Meeting provides a forum for more than 600 research and practice presentations across 26 Technical Groups, representing all aspects of human factors and ergonomics. Plan to present a lecture or poster of your latest work or ideas, organize a panel of experts on a timely subject, give a demo of cutting-edge technology, or share your expertise in a workshop.
 
We invite you to submit your proposal by March 3, 2021.

  1. Those who work in any of the following fields: Human Factors, Ergonomics, Applied Psychology, Industrial or Organizational Engineering, Industrial or Organizational Psychology, Cognitive Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, Applied Psychology, or any other related field
  2. Embedded in a medical facility like a hospital

The goal of this study to better understand the current needs and standing of the field including knowledge, skills, and job descriptions.

HFES Announces 2021 Human Factors Prize Competition

The Human Factors Prize was established in 2010 by former Editor-in-Chief William S. Marras to recognize excellence in HF/E research through an annual competition in which authors are invited to submit papers on a specific topic for that year. The topic is selected by the editor in chief in consultation with a Board of Referees chaired by the immediate past Human Factors editor. The prize carries a $5,000 cash award and consideration of publication of the winning paper in the Society's flagship journal, Human Factors. The award is formally conferred at a special session at the HFES International Annual Meeting, where the recipient presents his or her work. Submissions will be accepted between May 15 and June 15, 2021.
Cybersecurity Technical Group Seeks Nominees for Elected Office
The Cybersecurity Technical Group is currently accepting nominations through February 9, 2021 for the Officer positions of Chair-Elect, Program Chair, and Media/Outreach Officer. To be eligible, you must be a member of the Cybersecurity TG. Non-members may join the group upon nomination. Self-nominations are permitted.

HFES Seeks Nominees for Prestigious Society Awards
HFES Full Members and Fellows are invited to submit nominations for eight Society awards to be presented at the 65th International Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, October 4 – 8, 2021.

Award nominations are invited for individuals whose contributions merit special recognition. The eight awards for which nominees are sought are:

  • Hal W. Hendrick Distinguished International Colleague Award
  • Paul M. Fitts Education Award
  • R. Lauer Safety Award
  • Alexander C. Williams, Jr., Design Award
  • Jack A. Kraft Innovator Award
  • Oliver Keith Hansen Outreach Award
  • William C. Howell Young Investigator Award
  • Bentzi Karsh Early-Career Service Award

Nominees are not required to be HFES members, but only members of HFES may submit nominations. The nomination submission deadline for each award above is 11:59 p.m. EST on Wednesday, March 31, 2021

Volunteer of the Month: Rupa Valdez
Rupa Valdez is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia. She merges the disciplines of human factors engineering, health informatics, and cultural anthropology to understand and support the ways in which people manage health at home and in the community. Her research and teaching focus on underserved populations, including populations that are racial/ethnic minorities, are of low socioeconomic status or are living with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities. Her work draws heavily on community engagement and has been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and the Kellogg Foundation, among others.

In addition to her academic work, Rupa is a disability rights advocate and the founder and president of Blue Trunk Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to making it easier for people with chronic health conditions, disabilities, and age-related conditions to travel.
Dr. Richard J. Holden to Head Department of Health & Wellness Design
Dr. Richard J. Holden will join Indiana University's School of Public Health-Bloomington as Chair of the Department of Health & Wellness Design beginning in July. "Health by design is something I have pursued for nearly 20 years, so it's a dream come true to join a department of like-minded, passionate people," he says.

Currently, Holden is a research scientist with the Indiana University Center for Aging Research at the Regenstrief Institute, an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, and Chief Healthcare Engineer with the Center for Health Innovation & Implementation Science. He was awarded the distinction of Dean's Eminent Scholar as part of his appointment to SPH. He also holds multiple advanced degrees in industrial engineering and psychology. Some of his research areas of focus include human-centered design methods for health; patient ergonomics and chronic disease; and health information technology (IT) and sociotechnical change. Professor Holden currently holds both an active R01 and an active R21 grant as principal investigator from NIH, both focused on aging and Alzheimer's disease.
