Culture: Shared Attitudes, Values, Goals, and Practices

Every association, business, society, and other type of group has a culture–the question is whether or not those in the organization decide what it is. Organizations of all kinds should purposefully develop and maintain an effective governance culture that outlines their principles and chosen values.

Governing boards and councils that historically operate smoothly and with mutual respect often have adopted culture statements. A governance culture statement goes a long way in explaining to potential new leaders how the organization functions as a team. It gives clarity to how governing leaders and staff work, act, and treat one another. A culture statement can serve as so much more than a resource for new leaders; it guides all members of leadership in all they do. When more voices are heard, there is a greater likelihood that different perspectives will be considered. That, in turn, can lead to innovative ideas and solutions.

Chosen values on display can make even robust debate and discussion, conducted in a collegial and respectful environment, top of mind when discussions are held and decisions made. Now, HFES’ chosen values are on display. During the mid-year Executive Council meeting, the Society leadership adopted an HFES Governance Culture Statement. View the statement at the link below.

Special thanks to Dr. Karen Jacobs, past HFES Outreach Division Chair, for her contributions to the development of this statement.
HFES Issues Policy Statement: The Key to Reducing Medical Error is Better Attention to Hyman Factors in Healthcare System

Recently, a nurse in Nashville was criminally charged and convicted of reckless homicide after a medical error in which the wrong medication was administered leading to the death of the patient. There is a long history of blaming the individual when errors occur. This however does nothing to fix the systemic problems that underlie medical error which must be addressed in order to improve patient safety. Punishment of a nurse who has good intentions for the care of their patient, but failed to perform due to a myriad of work system deficiencies, is not an avenue to safer medical practices. Between 22,000 and 25,000 cases of medical error result in preventable deaths each year in the US. Tragedies like these can be significantly avoided or reduced by using Human Factors science in the design of healthcare technologies and work systems.
Upcoming Webinar: HFES Task Force on Sustainability and Human Factors Webinar

When: Thursday, May 12, 2022 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time
Speakers: Dr. Antony Hilliad, Hitachi Energy Research; Dr. Katya Le Blanc, Idaho National Laboratories; Prof. Esa Rantanen, Rochester Institute of Technology
Moderator: Prof. Andrew Thatcher (Ph.D., Cognitive Ergonomics, U. Witswatersrand, South Africa)

The continued use of fossil fuels for electricity generation is unsustainable, not only because they are a finite resource but particularly because of their contribution to the greenhouse effect and climate change. After frequent calls for energy companies to move towards renewable energy sources, this transition is now decisively underway in many jurisdictions. While renewable energy sources such as wind and solar significantly reduce carbon emissions, they challenge the reliable operation of energy systems. Renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, generate intermittently and vary with weather and region (i.e., cloud cover, calm winds). Some combination of significant energy storage capacity, longer-distance electric transmission, and/or more flexible energy demand will be required to provide a consistent, controllable, quality energy supply. Grid operation is already becoming more complex and requiring faster operating procedures which are more difficult to control by humans and automation.

Call for Volunteers: Citation of Standards and Best Practices in HFES Publications

Many times over the years, HFES members have told the Executive Council, both directly and in surveys, that connecting the research in HFES publications with practice is a struggle. There are many ways this translation, a strategic goal, could be accomplished. One of them is require that HFES publications cite relevant standards, best practices, etc. This citation requirement only make sense if relevant standards and best practices can be found. Therefore: Given the educational resources to be provided, can candidate authors of HFES publications (and reviewers of them) find standards/best practices, etc. relevant to an article they are writing (or could write or review)?

We are seeking volunteers from the Society to examine the educational resources that are available to help people find standards. We provide resources to get volunteers started including a report, “Getting Research Into Practice via Standards”. Other resources may be examined as well. Volunteers should select two articles from an HFES Publication (e.g., the Journal, the Proceedings and find the standards / best practices / etc. that are relevant to each of the two articles you examined. A sample reporting template is provided.

Please consider this request to volunteer with HFES. We appreciate all of the help our members can provide.

Congratulations to the April HFES Volunteer of the Month: Rod Rosco, PhD
Rod Rosco, PhD, Arizona State University

Rod Rosco has been a member of HFES for 5 years, serving as the Chair for the Societal Impact Committee and as a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. He earned his PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, with a focus on learning processes and peer learning. His first postdoctoral position (Vanderbilt) was in Computer Science, to work on teachable agent systems and AI in STEM learning, and his second postdoctoral position introduced him to automated writing evaluation and intelligent tutoring systems in literacy education.

While his entire career has been in academia, he has enjoyed a variety of disciplines and settings spanning educational psychology, intelligent systems, and human-centered design. Rosco's current research brings together insights from learning science, cognitive science, computer science, user-centered design, and equity to support educational systems and technologies that help people reach their best potential. Current projects include work on automated writing evaluation and intelligent tutoring of writing strategies, inclusive language analytics, equity-centered courseware for chemistry, and engineering education.

During his time with HFES, Rosco has been so impressed with the level of awareness and advocacy that HF/E experts can bring to equity in their fields--that kind of work is crucial and inspiring. For that reason, he was honored to be able to showcase some of that work in an edited volume (co-edited with Drs. Erin Chiou and Abigail Wooldridge). That book won an award, which is testament to the scholars and practitioners who were featured. That book is something he'll be proud of for his whole career.

To anyone interested in getting more involved with HFES, Rosco would encourage them 'Do it! The society needs your insight and energy, and there are so many ways to grow in/through HFES.'
