HFES Full Members and Fellows are invited to submit nominations for eight Society awards to be presented at the 66th International Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, October 10 – 14, 2022.
Award nominations are invited for individuals whose contributions merit special recognition. The eight awards for which nominees are sought are:
- Hal W. Hendrick Distinguished International Colleague Award
- Paul M. Fitts Education Award
- R. Lauer Safety Award
- Alexander C. Williams, Jr., Design Award
- Jack A. Kraft Innovator Award
- Oliver Keith Hansen Outreach Award
- William C. Howell Young Investigator Award
- Bentzi Karsh Early-Career Service Award
Nominees are not required to be HFES members, but only members of HFES may submit nominations. The nomination submission deadline for each award above is Friday, April 15, 2022.

Registration Open: Virtual 2022 HFES International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care
Building upon last month’s in-person Health Care Symposium, HFES is pleased to announce the 2022 Virtual International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care, June 7-9, 2022. With all new programming, different from that of the in-person event, this virtual experience will allow those who were unable to travel to still access the insights and innovations that are driving innovation in human factors in health care.

HFES Seed Grants Targeting the Intersections of HF/E and Anti‐Racism/Anti‐Bias: Request for Proposals
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) continues its seed grant program in support of research and programming that investigates and addresses the intersections of Human Factors/Ergonomics and Anti-Racism/Anti-Bias. This grant program will stimulate and support projects and research intended to improve our understanding of and reduce/eliminate racism and bias in the systems, environments, products and tools with which humans interact. Seed grants fund the early stages of projects with the potential for broad impact or provide preliminary data for future state, federal, foundation or other grant proposal mechanisms. The long-term goal of this grant program is to identify evidence‐based solutions to the problems of racism and bias.

Leadership is Calling
The annual election for Secretary-Treasurer-Elect, President-Elect, and for two at-large seats on the HFES Executive Council kicks off next month with the annual call for nominations.
All Full members are eligible to hold office in HFES and are encouraged to consider holding elected office in the Society. Service to HFES as a member of the Executive Council has many benefits and provides opportunities to develop and expand skills, give back to the community, test oneself in new ways, and contribute one's talents for the benefit of others.

Request for Volunteers – Citation of Standards and Best Practices in HFES Publications
Many times over the years, HFES members have told the Executive Council, both directly and in surveys, that connecting the research in HFES publications with practice is a struggle. There are many ways this translation, a strategic goal, could be accomplished. One of them is require that HFES publications cite relevant standards, best practices, etc. This citation requirement only make sense if relevant standards and best practices can be found. Therefore: Given the educational resources to be provided, can candidate authors of HFES publications (and reviewers of them) find standards/best practices, etc. relevant to an article they are writing (or could write or review)?
We are seeking volunteers from the Society to examine the educational resources that are available to help people find standards. We provide resources to get volunteers started including a report, “Getting Research Into Practice via Standards”. Other resources may be examined as well. Volunteers should select two articles from an HFES Publication (e.g., the Journal, the Proceedings and find the standards / best practices / etc. that are relevant to each of the two articles you examined. A sample reporting template is provided.

Apply for the Annual Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award
The deadline to apply for the annual Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award is June 30, 2022. The Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) gives the award to the student (or group of students) for an Ergonomics project that demonstrates the major practice areas of Ergonomics: Analysis, Design, and Integration. The award is open, world wide, to students (Honours, M.S. or Ph.D.) in Ergonomics and Ergonomics-related programs. Students who have completed their graduate degrees in the past year are also eligible. In addition to the award, there is a $1,000(US). The award and check will be presented during the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting, October 10-14 2022, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
In addition, $1,000.00 will be awarded to the professor who served as the mentor for the student project. The cash award is made to the university department or lab for the professor’s discretionary use to advance education in the practice of ergonomics and human factors. The student(s), professor, and university will be recognized on the FPE website as recipients of the award, and a summary of the student project will be posted. Colin Drury Wins 2021 Ergonomics Practitioner of the Year
Colin Drury, PhD, CPE ret. is the recipient of the 2021 Ergonomics Practitioner of the Year Award. The Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) initiated the annual award to recognize colleagues who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the practice of ergonomics through their professional lifetime achievements and/or specific implementation projects. Colin is the President at Applied Ergonomics Group and is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at State University of New York at Buffalo. He is a Fellow of both the CIEHF and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. While an accomplished professor who advised many students, Colin stated that this award is very special to him as it recognizes his many contributions in applying ergonomics concepts and techniques to real world problems in the industrial world.

NIOSH Toolkit Goes International
Ergonomics can truly be collaborative! The Ergonomics Committee of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) is in the final stages of updating their Ergonomic Assessment Toolkit with assistance from the NIOSH NORA Musculoskeletal Health Council. The Toolkit is an online guide to 25 free tools which can help practitioners assess the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The Foundation for Professional Ergonomics and their International Representatives have been assisting with translating the Toolkit into multiple languages. It is currently being translated into Spanish, Arabic, and Hindi. Mandarin is next! The update and initial translations should be completed soon and will be shared on multiple different websites (AIHA, NIOSH, FPE, etc.) for ease of access for users.

FPE Awards Impact Grants to Thailand and Malaysia
The Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) is pleased to announce the winners of the FPE Impact Grants for 2021. FPE Impact Grants aim to provide seed funding for small (pilot) projects that support the development of professional ergonomics worldwide. A total of eighteen high-quality proposals were received from Columbia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The selection committee, comprising Drs. Harvey Cohen, Waldemar Karwowski (Chair), and Dick Kelly, unanimously decided to provide funding to two excellent proposals deemed to have the highest potential impact on the practice of ergonomics worldwide.

Students Tie for International Award
Students from India and the US share honors as being the 2021 recipients of the Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) 2021 international Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award. Bhawana Rathore is a doctoral student at the National Institute of Industrial Engineering Mumbai, India. Anita Ney and Lillian Lacey (coauthors) are students from the University of Cincinnati.

Topic for the 2022 Human Factors Prize Competition Announced
The Human Factors Prize was established in 2010 by Editor-in-Chief William S. Marras to recognize excellence in HF/E research through an annual competition in which authors are invited to submit papers on a specific topic for that year. The prize carries a $5,000 cash award and consideration of publication of the winning paper in the Society's journal, Human Factors. The award is formally conferred at a special session at the HFES International Annual Meeting, where the recipient presents his or her work.
The Topic for the 2022 Human Factors Prize Competition is: Equity and Inclusivity
Submissions are accepted between May 13 and June 17, 2022. HFES will activate the submission site link on May 13 and will close it on June 15.

Human Centered AI by Ben Shneiderman. Oxford University Press, 2022

HCAI is a book that, not surprisingly given the title, strongly adopts a perspective that is quite compatible with the beliefs and values of the human factors community. In his well-written, enjoyable and easy-to-read book he echoes many points that have been made by this community for 40 years, with its origins in aviation psychology, beginning with the pioneering work of Earl Wiener, Charlie Billings, Raja Parasuraman, Nadine Sarter, John Lee and others. His writing nicely complements this approach grounded in engineering psychology, with that from the computer science perspective.
Shneiderman is a highly credentialed computer scientist, who has gained a great deal of respect within the computer science community, initially with his excellent work on data visualization. Throughout the book, he laments that much of the CS community pays little regard for the human user; and his principled devotion imparted in this book is to turn their attention toward greater heed to human centered issues in artificial intelligence. He is an optimist that this will happen.

President Biden Signs FY 2022 Omnibus Appropriations Bill Into Law After Months of Debate

On March 15, 2022, President Biden signed into law the massive end-of-year spending package that included $1.5 trillion in fiscal year (FY) 2022 omnibus appropriations and $13.6 billion in aid for Ukraine. Six months into FY 2022 and after three Continuing Resolutions (CR) that extended government operations to avoid shutdowns, Congress finally reached a bipartisan agreement on the 12 annual appropriations bills, passing the House on a vote of 361-69 and the Senate on a vote of 68-31. One of the main reasons for the delay in passing the final budget was disagreements over defense versus non-defense spending. The final bill has defense getting a boost of 5.6 percent, totaling $730 billion, leaving non-defense spending with a boost of 6.7 percent, totaling $782 billion. This contrasts with President Biden’s budget request but ultimately had to be done to receive the republican support needed to pass the major legislation.

Submit Proposals to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Special Emphasis Notice
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) released a special emphasis notice (SEN) inviting health services research grant proposals to develop models of care that improve access, quality, and outcomes of care related to COVID-19 and post-acute sequalae from COVID-19 (PASC), also known as long COVID. In this SEN, AHRQ is interested in “applications that develop, implement, and evaluate interventions and models of care, including those targeting the specific needs and challenges of disadvantaged populations and people living with Multiple Chronic Conditions (MCC), that improve access, quality, and outcomes of care. Proposed studies may focus on the patient, clinician, practice, or system level interventions.” Multilevel interventions are encouraged, as are projects that produce and disseminate insights that can be used to improve patient care and inform healthcare delivery in routine operations and during public health emergencies.
AHRQ encourages applicants to submit proposals to this SEN using the standing R18, R03, and R01 (PA-18-793, PA-18-794, PA-18-795) funding mechanisms. The SEN is active until February 14, 2025.
