ANSI/HFES 400-2021 Standard
In September 2021, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) formally approved a newly developed standard: ANSI/HFES 400-2021, Human Readiness Level Scale in the System Development Process. This standard defines the nine levels of the Human Readiness Level (HRL) scale and provides guidance for their application in the context of systems engineering and human systems integration processes. The HRL scale complements and supplements the existing Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale in order to evaluate, track, and communicate the readiness of a technology or system for safe and effective human use.
The standard is available free of charge to both HFES members and non-members through the HFES online store.

Senate Releases Nine Remaining FY 2022 Appropriations Bills
The Senate Appropriations Committee released its nine remaining fiscal year (FY) 2022 appropriations bills on October 18. While the Senate bills, like the House bills, boost funding for major programs, they still fall short of the funding increases proposed in the Biden Administration’s FY 2022 budget request. The Senate funding levels, for the most part, are below those proposed by the House. Of the nine released bills, below are highlights of appropriations bills and programs most relevant to HFES.

Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) Impact Grants
The Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) is pleased to announce the availability of the FPE Impact Grants that aim to support small projects in the quest of developing professional ergonomics around the world. The funding preference will be given, but not limited to, applicants from the developing countries (as defined by United Nations) or proposals that help develop or grow professional ergonomics in the developing countries.
The FPE Impact Grants are intended as seed funding for small (pilot) projects that could potentially lead to but are not required, more extensive funding opportunities from other sources in the future. The expected budget of a single proposal should be between $500 and $2,000 and must not exceed $2,500 USD.
The deadline for submission is November 15, 2021, with awards given before the end of the year on December 31, 2021. The general format for proposals can be downloaded at here.

In Memoriam - James D. Baker
In the late 1950’s Jim was one of the earliest who worked with human/computer interfaces. This occurred at MIT’s Lincoln Labs on the SAGE system, the predecessor to NORAD, our National Command and Control System. At the USAF Decision Sciences Laboratory, he contributed to further NORAD developments. These interconnected systems eventually morphed into the DoD’s ARPANET and subsequently the Internet.
Read more about Jim's contributions to the HF/E field and HFES as a whole here.

Volunteer of the Month: Tom Albin
Tom Albin is a Principal at High Plains Engineering Services in Minneapolis, MN and has been a member of HFES since the late 1980s. He is currently a member of the Membership Committee, Government Relations Committee, Crisis Committee, Representatives and Liaisons Committee, and Jack Kraft Award Committee.
He attributes the Society with having great potential for enriching members' professional lives. He shares that attending the Annual Meeting has always been an opportunity to network and to catch up with old friends, and he nearly always find some real gems in the presentations that I can apply in my practice.
He shares "One outstanding opportunity was participating in the ANSI/HFES 100 committee. It was an opportunity to work side-by-side with the leading authorities of the day, as well as meeting and learning from other practitioners. It was the best professional development seminar that I can imagine. HFES is built and sustained by volunteers. Volunteering is an opportunity to help shape and develop our Society and profession so that future generations of Human Factors and Ergonomics professionals will enjoy the same benefits that I have found in HFES."
Tom encourages members to "jump in with both feet," and to see their membership in HFES as an outstanding growth opportunity, as well as an opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of the science and practice of human factors and ergonomics!
