HFES Recognizes Society Award Winners

HFES congratulates the winners of a variety of awards and honors bestowed at the in-person edition of the 65th Annual Meeting in Baltimore on October 5. While not all award recipients were able to be with us in person, all were recognized and congratulated. We were honored with the presence of past HFES President Betty M. Sanders whose name has been added to the “President’s Award”.  This award is now known as the Arnold M. Small and Betty M. Sanders President's Distinguished Service Award.

October is National Ergonomics Month

HFES and the National Ergonomics Month (NEM) Committee are accepting entries for our National Ergonomics Month Contest. New in 2021, we're featuring two themes:

Back to the Future: What Did We Leave Behind, and Where are We Going?”
Participants should provide a snapshot of how life, education, healthcare, work industry, community and/or innovation has evolved in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, and what they believe are the HF/E implications as we approach new national and global normals.

Spotlight on Healthcare Industry Application
Clinicians work tirelessly to care for patients. There are many opportunities to continue applying HF/E principles and awareness in the healthcare industry to further patient and provider safety. Participants should demonstrate, describe, or illustrate HF/E applications to address challenges in healthcare.

Applications are due by Monday, November 1, 2021. View this page for more details.
Member News Spotlight: Emily Rickel

Emily Rickel is a PhD Candidate within the Department of Human Factors and Behavioral Neurobiology at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She was recently awarded a SMART Scholarship to complete her PhD studies. The SMART Scholarship is a prestigious Department of Defense (DoD) funded award that provides full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the DoD after graduation.
Member News: Mark Schall, Jr. Named Rising Safety Star

Mark Schall Jr., industrial and systems engineering associate professor, has been named a 2021 Rising Star of Safety by the National Safety Council. The class of 2021 is comprised of 38 honorees younger than age 40, showcasing the next generation of leaders redefining the future of safety and health.

Schall is a committed leader of several safety and ergonomics communities across the Auburn University campus and internationally. Schall also serves as the Engineering Safety Council chair for the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering and the director of the Occupational Safety and Ergonomics (OSE) program of the Deep South Center for Occupational Health and Safety.

Schall’s research focuses on applying direct measurement technologies that enhance objective exposure assessments in ergonomics to improve the health, safety and well-being of working people by refining decision-making. His recently funded projects include a field-based exploration of wearable inertial sensors in the manufacturing industry and a laboratory-based investigation of novel surface electromyography and inertial sensor signal processing techniques to classify and predict kinematics of the warfighter.

As director of the OSE training program of the Deep South Center for Occupational Health and Safety, one of 18 education and research centers sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health across the United States, he leads a group of faculty devoted to training graduate-level professionals to identify, analyze and prevent occupational hazards. Applying engineering methodologies and designs, the program is one of the largest producers of occupational safety and health professionals across the nation.
New HFES Task Force on Sustainability Formed

The HFES Executive Council has established a Sustainability Task Force in response to expressions of interest by HFES members to expand both research and application of HFE principles into areas related to sustainability. The new HFES Task Force on Sustainability will be chaired by HFES Fellow, David Rempel.

A task force is well justified due to the potentially large and impactful role that HFE can play in societally critical sustainability initiatives including: the transition to renewable energy, the electrification of buildings and transportation systems, the design of systems to address product life-cycle, the management of food and water resources to limit waste, and others.

The goal of the HFES Sustainability Task Force is to increase awareness of how HFE can impact sustainability, and to promote collaboration in sustainability related areas among HFES members and Technical Groups as well as with others outside HFES with whom such collaboration can be impactful.

Those interested in joining this task force, or to provide input, are invited to contact David Rempel or Dan Gottesman. The formation of an HFES Technical Group (TG) on sustainability will be considered in the future based at least partly on what is learned during the tenure of this task force.
ANSI/HFES 400-2021

In September 2021, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) formally approved a newly developed standard: ANSI/HFES 400-2021, Human Readiness Level Scale in the System Development Process. This standard defines the nine levels of the Human Readiness Level (HRL) scale and provides guidance for their application in the context of systems engineering and human systems integration processes. The HRL scale complements and supplements the existing Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale in order to evaluate, track, and communicate the readiness of a technology or system for safe and effective human use. The standard is available free of charge to both HFES members and nonmembers through the HFES online store.
Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) Impact Grants

The Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) is pleased to announce the availability of the FPE Impact Grants that aim to support small projects in the quest of developing professional ergonomics around the world. The funding preference will be given, but not limited to, applicants from the developing countries (as defined by United Nations) or proposals that help develop or grow professional ergonomics in the developing countries.

The FPE Impact Grants are intended as seed funding for small (pilot) projects that could potentially lead to but are not required, more extensive funding opportunities from other sources in the future. The expected budget of a single proposal should be between $500 and $2,000 and must not exceed $2,500 USD.

The deadline for submission is November 15, 2021, with awards given before the end of the year on December 31, 2021. The general format for proposals can be downloaded at here.

Send proposals to Waldemar Karwowski or Harvey Cohen.
Consultant & Expert Witness Directory

HFES provides searchable directory of human factors/ergonomics consultants and expert witnesses as a public service. The directory contains listings created by HFES members as well as nonmembers who have paid a fee to promote their services. No endorsement is intended or implied, and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society assumes no responsibility or liability for services provided by individuals or companies listed. Potential clients are fully responsible for evaluating the qualifications of consultants/expert witnesses in relation to their own special requirements. Searches for consultants and expert witnesses may be conducted based on:

  • Name of Individual or Company Name
  • Specialty or Expertise Area
  • Geographic Location

The detailed listing for a consultant contains full contact information and specialties and may also include:

  • Additional Expertise Areas
  • Educational Background
  • Supplemental Background (e.g., Certifications or Honors)
