Submit Applications for 2021 HFES Fellows by February 26
The Fellows Selection Committee invites applications for the HFES Fellow designation. Election to Fellow status is an honor conferred by distinguished colleagues to recognize outstanding achievement, consistently superior professional performance, exceptional contributions, personal service to the Society, and other meritorious accomplishments by Society members. Any Full Member in good standing may apply. Individuals may apply for Fellow status on their own behalf or submit an application on behalf of another.
Applications are due by Friday, February 26, 2021.

The 65th International Annual Meeting will convene October 4 - 8, 2021 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel.
Present your work at the meeting. Submit your proposal for consideration of presentation through the submission portal before the deadline of Tuesday, March 3, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. EST.

HFES Announces 2021 Human Factors Prize Competition
The Human Factors Prize was established in 2010 by Editor-in-Chief William S. Marras to recognize excellence in HF/E research through an annual competition in which authors are invited to submit papers on a specific topic for that year. The topic is selected by the editor in chief in consultation with a Board of Referees chaired by the immediate past Human Factors editor. The prize carries a $5,000 cash award and consideration of publication of the winning paper in the Society's flagship journal, Human Factors. The award is formally conferred at a special session at the HFES International Annual Meeting, where the recipient presents his or her work. Submissions will be accepted between May 15 and June 15, 2021.

HFES Full Members and Fellows are invited to submit nominations for eight Society awards to be presented at the 65th International Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, October 4 – 8, 2021.
Award nominations are invited for individuals whose contributions merit special recognition. The eight awards for which nominees are sought are:

HFES Seeks Individuals to Participate on Consensus Review Committee
HFES is seeking interested individuals to participate in a consensus review committee for the newly proposed American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/HFES 400 standard. The committee will be asked to review the draft standard and to vote on its acceptance. The consensus committee will be restricted to approximately 12 individuals.
This standard is being developed to specify how to apply the Human Readiness Level (HRL) scale in the system development process. The HRL scale is a simple nine-level scale that complements and supplements the existing Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale in order to evaluate, track, and communicate the readiness of a system for human use.

What are Affinity Groups (AG)? Affinity groups provide opportunities for people to connect with other people who share aspects of their identity, especially in situations in which aspects of their identity are in the minority or are marginalized. HF/E Affinity Groups can provide mutual support and a sense of community within the society. The Affinity Groups are an extension of HF/E Diversity and Inclusion efforts, focusing on both inclusivity within the profession and on advancing science that addresses longstanding societal problems. Affinity Groups differ from Technical Groups as they offer community, mentoring, and support based on areas of collective identification. The Affinity Groups can concentrate on challenging our profession to address these dimensions of personal identification more thoughtfully. We hope that these communities will play an integral role throughout the course of a member’s career. There is no cost to become a member of an HFES affinity group.

President Trump Signs FY 2021 Spending Bills and COVID-19 Relief Legislation into Law
In December, President Trump signed into law a massive legislative package that included a $1.4 trillion fiscal year (FY) 2021 omnibus appropriations bill, $908 billion for COVID-19 pandemic relief, and several other pieces of legislation. President Donald Trump ultimately signed the legislation, despite threats to veto the bill, on December 27 following Congress’ broad bipartisan support of the bill: the House passed it with a vote of 359-53 while the Senate passed the bill on a 92-6 vote. The COVID-19 package had been the center of contentious negotiations between Democrats and Republicans since the summer, as the two parties had been previously unable to agree on a topline funding amount for COVID-19 relief, as well as priorities that this legislation would address. Ultimately, public pressure stemming from the deteriorating economic situation and a surge of COVID-19 infections in the winter was critical in forcing Congress to make a deal.
